View Full Version : GordianKnot and DivX 6.8 : output size

Hello there,

I'm a really happy user of the association of GordianKnot 0.35 and DivX 5.2.1 for a few years now.

I just got me a new quad core rig, and since I was expecting it for quite a long time, I upgraded to DivX 6.8 a few months ago (but didn't install it at once)

Now it's all set and ready, but I can't get it to work properly : it seems that the DivX encoder won't listen to GK's bitrate recommendations...
I've tried several settings for the codec, but there's no way to get the right file size...

I tried to downgrade to my old v5.2.1, and everything went fine then. But the benefits in speed were gone...

Did someone manage to get these two to work together ?

-- edit --
I tried one last thing : manually setting the bitrate calculated by GK on the "bitrate" tab in the DivX Codec (for both passes) does the trick, the output size is correct.
But this is not very handy, especially for a movie where I want to encode the ending credits with a constant-quality-single pass...

Thanks a lot for your help...

I had the same troubles, as well as with later builds with both Xvid and x264, and finally just stuck with the last VfW build of x264. The video quality is better than the other two.

There are a few other, newer apps that work properly with latest versions of codecs, some of which will yield a better quality than Gordian Knot.

Thanks for your answer !

OK, I guess that settles it. lol

I will give x264 a try, but for know I stick with codecs that'll be read by my standalone player.

Would you have one or two examples of such "newer apps" ?
I must admit I did not try to stay "up to date" with what was happening in this domain... :)

I actually still use Gordian Knot myself, but if you go to the main Doom9.net page and click Downloads, there's a slew of encoders listed.

I don't use a standalone player, but if I'm not mistaken the codec used isn't nearly as important as the container. The steps you use to create a compliant video with DivX should also work with x264.

XviD VfW works almost flawlessly with GordianKnot ... if you plan to play the encodes on standalone (hardware) players, your x264 encodes almost surely won't work, you'd better go to XviD if that's the case.
