View Full Version : Check which MP3 codec has been used

Sorry if this is a common question. I tried searching but didn't find anything.

Does anyone know of a program that can tell you exactly which MP3 codec has been used to encode an MP3 file?

The program called dBpowerAMP did this and was free up to version 10 I think, but that version doesn't work properly with Vista it seems. Under XP, the MP3 file's tooltip was replaced and contained extensive information about the file and usually pinpointed exactly which MP3 codec had been used (often also the exact version too). I'd like to have this functionality again, I miss it.

GSpot is no help unfortunately. It only tells the bitrate and such.

Has to work with Vista 64-bit and be free I should say.

Does such a tool exist?

I think MediaInfo does this

Great, thanks!

Can't get the tooltip thingy to work under 64-bit Windows though, but this will definitely suffice! I'm guessing that's coming in the future.

EncSpot does it too. IDK about using it with Vista though.

That software required some registration or something like that to work. Also, development seems to have stopped.

Thanks anyway though!

That's a question for Mr. QuestionMan (http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=5)

Great alternative when inspecting multiple files, thanks!

Try the MP3 Converter, MP3 Converter can convert most audi format to mp3.

That tool is shareware (not free) and I don't think it displays the codec used on already encoded files, does it?

It's a spammer, ignore it. By the specification, does an encoder have to write its details in the MP3 file?

As I recall from when EncSpot still had documentation, no. It 'guessed' based on some other characteristics if it wasn't in the header.
