View Full Version : DVDSubEdit causes playback glitches to first subpic ?

I've been experiencing this with some of the discs I've authored with DVDSUbEdit to adjust subtitle positioning or whatnot. When playing the resulting disc, I get a very brief visual distortion/glitch when the first subpic SPU hits the screen (sometimes hiding the subpic and causing block artifacts for a fraction of a second); apparently, the whole remaining disc always plays fine. Quite annoying.
One thing I've noticed is that this doesn't occur with playback on the PC, but only with standalone players (I use two players of different brands which exhibit the same problem though, diminishing the probability of it being player related). I've tried both DVDSubEdit v1.40 and v1.41 (the latest).
Anyone experiencing the same thing ? Any ideas ? More importantly, any way of preventing this from happening ?
Thanks for any help :)

Welcome to the forum, kweldood!
I have had a similar issue with some standalone players in the past. Jeanl has tried to fix the problem, but we are not sure of its cause.
A trick that may work: try moving the subpics up or down by an even number of lines only. It's difficult to control manually if you use the borders (with or without the "flush" option) to align your subpics. It's why there is an option in the INI file of DVDSubEdit (in your ApplicationData folder):ForceEvenMoves=1
See this post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1163815#post1163815) for more info.

Thanks, guys. I'll test the even-odd possibility.
Do you think it would make any difference to just rip my already authored troublesome DVD back to my hard drive, move the subpics up or down by just 1 line to quick "fix" it and burn a new disc ?
Or must I necessarily go back to the untouched original DVD and re-author from scratch ?
I'm only asking this because the first option would consume far less of my time and resources (re-encoding and authoring at different levels are involved).
Currently I don't know how that even-odd problem works (i.e. if it is reversible after authoring with DVDSubEdit) so I'm not sure if there is any logic at all to this question.

Sorry, but if the subpic has been badly re-encoded, moving it again is probably not sufficient to fix it.

Yeah, I fear that too. Well, I went ahead and just re-authored from scratch from the untouched source and this time used the ForceEvenMoves=1 parameter when aligning the subs vertically.
Just burned and tested and the problem persists, so it must be something else.
I read that other topic where it's mentioned that the sub background being moved out of frame may cause the issue, but is there a solution for that ?
Any further suggestions ?
Thanks again.

@kweldood
Hi!
I'd be curious to know if you play the DVD on your standalone player for a while and then go back top "Chapter 1", does it still exhibit the problematic behavior?

Yes. It's a fixed glitch which occurs exactly the same way at exactly the same frame while playing.

kweldood,
I would like to take a look at the problem. It would help if you could send me (jeanldvd at free dot fr) a little nippet of the VOB around the first subpic that shows the problem. You would need to cut, say 1000 lbas before and after then subpic lba (you can use jsoto's cutfile utility which you'll find on the vobblanker page). I would need:
- The original IFO
- The snippet from the original VOB
- The snippet from the modified VOB.
If the result is too big to fit in an email, you can sent it to my via mediafire: http://www.mediafire.com/
Thanks

Thanks a lot for stepping in on this, jeanl - it's really appreciated!
I just uploaded the request files to MediaFire: http://www.mediafire.com/?vhal3v1hzgg . I included a readme with further info.
If it is a bug with DVDSubEdit, I hope this can help in sorting it out. Please let me know if I can provide any other information that you might need.
:thanks:

kweldood, could you also send me your DVDSubEdit.ini file (which you'll find in your %APPDATA% folder)? This way I'll know exactly what parameters the app used when doing the modification. Send that to my email address above, so we can keep on exchanging info by email rather than through the forum...

OK I tested the files you sent me, mediaplayerclassic won't even display the modified VOB, so there's definitely something bad.
I think this is a classic case of moving by odd number of pixels, the latest version
http://download.videohelp.com/DVDSubEdit/Downloads/DVDSubEdit1.4107.zip
should fix the problem.
I tried the same modification you made (moving by exactly the same number of pixels, and also changing the transparency) with that latest version, and the results play fine in mediaplayerclassic, so I think this will work fine in your player as well.
So in short: download the latest version above, start from a fresh rip, make the same modifications, save, burn, and test on your player. It should work OK now...

No no no... you can't fool me, jeanl - the latest version is now 1.5 :p
Actually, blutach had pointed me earlier to v1.4107, but I couldn't find it for download at http://download.videohelp.com/DVDSubEdit/ , and so assumed that it was the same as v1.41 and the "07" simply didn't come up in the program's "about" info screen. I see now that's not the case.
I'll follow your advice and try with the latest version(s), and post about the results soon.

I just did a fresh attempt from scratch using v1.5 . The problem remains, though.
jeanl, I emailed you the DVDSubEdit .ini as requested, in any case.

Dang it!
:) Would have been too easy wouldn't it?
I haven't received your email.... Make sure you send it to jeanldvd at free dot fr...
Thanks!

Weird. I re-sent it through a secondary email, you should have it by now.
