another question popped in my mind:
i know that the ps3 can play divx/xvid, and via conversion to vob mkv/avc-movies
but there is nowhere subtitle support, right ? (picture- or text-based)

PS3 will play divx/xvid without big hassle, just remember NOT GMC/QPEL/CUSTOM MATRIX
no subtitle support, sorry (but you can try to mux in a .divx the avi AND srt file..)

yes, for sure, but the hypervisor would not let linux using all cell cpus, and.. you have only 256mb ram avaiable... (aka... use xfce/fluxbox not gnome/kde)
can i access the multiple partitions from xmb and linux ?
from linux you cannot access xmb and from xmb you cannot access linux partition... but you can access external harddrives

ok, my questions are:
1) what is the maximum size of files stored on the ps3 hdd ?
Biggest file I've copied had 8GB and it was .m2t from HDV camera. Played flawlessy all the way through.
2) which filesystem is used internally? i read external drives must have fat32
Has to be something different inside than fat32, 8GB file copied fine. For external fat32 is true.
3) what is the maximum size of a hdd installed in the ps3 ?
I've got 320GB and it works perfectly.
And for divx/ xvid with subtitles search the forum for AviAddXsubs. Works excellent and is very easy to use. It muxes .avi with .srt subtitles to .divx container playable on ps3.
[EDIT]
Found it: AviAddXsubs (http://www.calcitapp.com/AVIAddXSubs.php)
