View Full Version : Using "Jump to PGC Upon DVD Insert" isn't working for me ...

Hi,

When I pop in the disc I'd like to edit for playback, the first screen that pops up is the language screen - fair enough. I'd like to jump immediately to the main menu instead of this, which is a fairly common thing to do. I followed blutach's excellent guide explaining how to "Jump to PGC upon DVD Insert" ( http://www.digital-digest.com/~blutach/Jump2PGC/Jump2PGC_guide.html ) and I run into a rather unexpected problem - and I'm not sure how to solve it.

I trace to the menu I want, then run "Trace – Toggle PGC Pre/Post Breakpoint", check that this is what I want, then try to choose "PGC – Jump to PGC Upon DVD Insert". Only problem is, I get this error message:

ERROR: To jump to a PGC in the VTST domain, you must select a Title entry (ie. a PGC with a Title number in the PGC Selector).

The Root Menu directly above it has no buttons, but is essentially a big blank, so jumping to that instead, which eventually leads to the menu I want is also a no-go, because there's no way to actually trace to it - when I just try highlighting it and jump to PGC, I get this error message:

ERROR: You must go to the target PGC using the trace. Do not select a PGC manually in the PGC Selector pane, and do not select a command manually in the main panel. You should use only the trace navigation buttons (and select the right DVD menu buttons if needed).

(I must admit, I was kinda expecting this last one). I'm not sure that anything I just said makes any sense ... :) ... but in any event, is there any way to jump to the menu that I want using PGCEdit? Any help would be appreciated.

I guess that your target menu is authored in the title domain using BOVs (and the label of its PGC begins by VTST). Right?

Unfortunately, Jump2PGC can jump only to any PGC with video contents in a menu domain (VMGM or VTSM) or to the entry PGC of any Title. If your menu is in a VTST and is not the entry PGC of that title, you cannot reach it directly.

However, it might be possible to modify the procedure slightly to reach your target menu. Use exactly the method explained in Blutach's guide, but instead of setting the breakpoint on your target PGC, set it to the entry PGC of the same title (same TTN number, but with a "Title X" in the label). After having applied the Jump2PGC function, PgcEdit should have added several commands at the beginning of the pre-commands area of the Title PGC, such as:

Then, insert a new command just before the NOP pointed to by the GoTo of the first command, to jump to your real target PGC. (I assume it's PGC 3.) You might have to modify (or insert) the SetHL_BTN command to highlight the button you want highlighted by default.

Okay, I am *thoroughly* weirded out here ... I got the authoring to work just fine when I double-click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO file in Windows Explorer - ie. I double-click on it, and the main menu comes up immediately, just like I wanted it ... however, I've tried burning it twice now, and when I play back the burned disc, the language menu comes up just like it did before ... I've never seen this happen before - whassup wit' dat ?? And is there any way around it ??

Well, that's abnormal, of course. All players should behave the same way, but it is well known that the software players have some bugs that could explain the difference. Could you post here the commands of the PGCs that have been modified by the function: the First-Play PGC, the entry PGC of the title (where you've applied the function) and your real target PGC? It is possible that some GPRMs are not correctly initialized by the Jump2PGC function, as, with the method I've explained, the trace has been stopped too early. Also, I would like to know the answer to the stearip_old's question.

Note that I have now modified the Jump2PGC function. It is now possible to reach a Title PGC that is not the entry PGC of a not-one_sequential Title, by selecting the real target PGC and without having to manually edit the DVD. Using the Jump2PGC function in your case should now be trivial.
(BTW, It is now also possible to reach a dummy PGC. Previously, that was prohibited, because PgcEdit has no way to check if the target dummy PGC is valid, but that limitation was frustrating for the experienced users.)

As you can see, the nav works by going to Title 4 from First play. Follow the logic and gprm(9) is set to 4 (line 12) and gprm(15) is set to 63 (line 18) and you start the title again (Link PGCN 1 - line 20). This takes you to the start of title 4 again, where you execute line 1 and jump immediately to line 21, due to gprm(15) passing the test. Now you go to line 24, since gprm(9) passes the test of being 4 (line 22), where gprm(9) is set to 3 (line 24) and you then branch to VMGM 5 (line 25). You'd need to post the commands of VMGM 5, too please.

Nah, that's too obvious ... :)

Okay, now I feel like a complete idiot ... I did as you suggested and popped it into a standalone player, and voila !! Worked just like I wanted it to ... oy ... :\

That does beg the next question though - why did it do that ??

VMGM 5 indicates that given GPRM(9)=3 now, title 3 should play. I guess this is your target VTST 1, 5?

So, your nav starts playback at title 3.

That does beg the next question though - why did it do that ??because, as "r0lZ" so eloquently stated, All players should behave the same way, but it is well known that the software players have some bugs that could explain the difference.And I would add - Especially regarding player programs that are not specifically fullblown DVD players...

VMGM 5 indicates that given GPRM(9)=3 now, title 3 should play. I guess this is your target VTST 1, 5?

So, your nav starts playback at title 3.


So, in other words, it *should* be working - but for whatever reason (namely, WMPC), it doesn't want to behave ... however, it works in a standalone player, so I'm good with it ... :)

WMP is not known as a good media player. Use Media Player Classic or VLC.
