SCART to S-Video cable gives black and white

Hi guys - bought a profigold golden Scart to S-Video cable, tried connecting my VCR to ADVC55 capture thingy - got black and white video.

Tried connecting the dvd to the plasma tv - got black and white picture.

Anyone got any idea what's up?

Yes, you haven't enabled S-video on the SCART output.

The ADVC55 will be receiving composite where it should receive luma (so you get a noisy black and white picture), and nothing where it should receive chroma (so you get no colour).

Check the manuals of the VCR and DVD player - not all SCART sockets can output S-video.

Funny, the Plasma TV - I gave out wrong info - it didn't output any signal at all! Once I enabled "s-video" on the av2 though it immidiately showed everything. (with the dvd player the connection goes not scart---> svideo but the other way around, since the plasma has no S-Video input... So I output from the DVD by the S-Video out, and enter the plasma with the SCART in, lolz).

The DVD though does have extra options, it outputs YUV atm, and can also output RGB...

Anyway, I will try to see if my "Philips VR550/39" can output s-video... Thanks.

So I output from the DVD by the S-Video out, and enter the plasma with the SCART in.

SCART connectors can either use Composite, S-Video or RBG signals. Composite used one single channel for all information, S-Video uses two separate channels (Color and Brightness) and RGB uses three independent channels (Red, Green and Blue). However most TV Screen only accept Composite or RGB via the SCART input, but not S-Video! If that is the case with your TV, then the S-Video signal is interpreted as Composite. Hence only the Luminance-Channel (Brightness) is used, the Chrominance-Channel (Color) is discarded. You'll see a gray ("black and white") video, exactly as you describe!

You should connect your DVD Player to the TV Screen via RGB through SCART on both sides. Alternatively you can use S-Video through Mini-DIN connectors on both sides. Another option is using "Component Video", which either uses three separate Cinch/RCA connectors (Y, Pb and Pr) or one combined VGA-Connector. Depends on what connectors are available on your devices...

However most TV Screen only accept Composite or RGB via the SCART input, but not S-Video!Many TVs have one RGB SCART, one S-video SCART, and one composite-only SCART. Others have one RGB SCART, and one switchable SCART. Others (high end models) have all switchable SCARTs.

If your VCR isn't S-VHS, then it won't have S-VIDEO output, not via SCART or dedicated S-Video connector.

I assume the DVD>TV>ADVC55 is some kind of test set-up to see if the ADVC55 is working? As a normal workflow, it's a very strange way of getting video from a DVD into a PC!

Lol, nah, I have 1 cable, and two ways I am checking it out:

1) dvd>plasma
2) vcr>advc>pc

So, in my plasma tv, all I had to do is unplug the SCART from the SCART1 hole, and put it in SCART2 hole - and switch in options to make it s-video receptive. Just liek you said, 1 SCART hole is not switchable, while the other can be switched!

My VCR however, I belive can't output S-Video... And so I will have to buy a different one...
