Copying DVD's

Hi,
I'm not a newbie...............newbies know something and I know absolutely nothing about copying DVD's for backup purposes.

Can someone suggest a tutorial, very basic, which will teach me to copy a DVD from scratch.

I mean from scratch...hardware, software etc etc.

Alternatively, if someone on this site could give me a breakdown, that would be great.

I know that this is a bit of a tall order and I haven't even bought a DVD player yet, but before I do I would like to know what I'm letting myself into.
