i set the purevideo to raw aspect, film, vmr9
i used ffdshow version 2079 clsid, media player classic home cinema version 1.1.604.0, avisynth and plugins found in the sticky.
i used these ffdshow settings:

mpc was set to use vmr9 windowed.

the first picture is noise, the second detail.

Is there any way to increase sharpening on PureVideo?

Personally, I think SeeSaw did the best, though I think a light denoise should be run before the sharpen anyways.

I believe you can adjust the sharpening parameters for PureVideo through the nivida control panel. I believe it's under right click desktop --> Nvidia Control Panel --> Video & Television --> Adjust Video Image Settings --> Edge Enhancement. There's also the noise reduction there, and the option of enabling Inverse Telecine (this bothers me a bit though, I don't know why they wouldn't autodetect for this)

here's the pictures but with purevideo edge enhancement.
same pictures as before, but the purevideo are difference, with it set to smart deinterlace not film as before.
i could not get the edge enhancement to work in any other disk since i use progressive disks and the hqv is interlaced.
i tried everything i could to get the same amout of detail enhancement on a regular movie dvd as was on the hqv test disk,
but regardless of how i set it it did not happen.
i think edge enhancement only happens when the purevideo coded is setup to use smart deinterlacing and the film is interlaced.

Relatively speaking, the edge enhanced version looks MUCH better than without it. It's no where near as good as Seesaw is doing, but it's certainly an improvement. Also, I don't see the blocking you're describing, but I do find it an improvement over the default purevideo settings.

Oh, okay, over the old PureVideo, maybe. Personal preference; to me, edge enhancement makes it look unnatural. Look closely... everything looks made up of blocks! Perhaps we should call it microblocking :p

well it's a interlaced picture and my seesaw config doesn't deinterlace, so i dunno what good this comparison is.

I was more interested in the denoising / EE capabilities of purevideo than deinterlacing ;) Not so great it seems on either front. I'll stick to ffdshow + avisynth.


@Ranguvar: It probably doesn't help that I'm viewing these images on a 15.4" laptop with a 1920x1200 screen. Everything looks much more compact and it's hard to see those artifacts on this laptop! Kind of a blessing sometimes.

i turned off the denoising and only used ee. if i use denoising then the picture will blur.

in my experience, ati denoising is either at 64 or nothing, and 64 totally blurs the details out, so i just turned denoisng off so the picture wouldn't llook all blurred out.

What surprises me is they still use spatial smearing filters, instead of investing some logic into some temporal based ones. Even with a window of 1, forwards and backwards, like what MVDegrain1 does, you can smush a lot of artifacts and keep 95% of the detail.
