MKV to AVI HELP!

Question for everyone. I have a Philips DVP-5990 Upconvert player hooked up to a 1080p Panasonic. I have a ton of MKV (720p) movies on my computer and would like to watch them on the Player through the USB port. The Player can handle Divx and AVI files no prob, so here's the question. How do I convert an MKV to an AVI, without losing picture quality? Also I'm on a mac, I've tried using ffmpegx and I just get confused with all the options. If someone has a step-by-step walkthrough it would be very appreciated. Thanks!

What format are the MKVs you made in? And personally I would recommend Xvid, is it OK if I help you use Xvid and not DivX? DivX players can play Xvid-encoded videos fine, as long as you don't use a few obscure settings.

And I would also check out the Popcorn Hour or the PS3. The former should handle your MKVs natively, and the latter can handle them with only minimal fuss.

2) Why don't you just play your original DVDs or backup copies?

@ Ranguvar: Yea, Xvid is fine. I just don't want to lose any res quality. I was actually planning on getting a PS3 pretty soon here. I've not read anything on it handling the MKV container well. I was under the impression all my MKV's would have to become AVI's in order to stream them to the PS3

@ Setarip_old: It displays them at 720p but it doesn't look like it Upconverts them. I just tried Leon: The Professional and Jurassic Park (both AVI's) and I could see some jaggies and some pixels. If I were to de-interlace the video, would the player be able to upconvert it then?

What format did you use when you made the MKVs?

Why can't you just play your original DVDs?

i doubt original DVDs are 720p.
it should be some other material for sure.

The PS3 can handle most MKVs after they've been remuxed to M2TS.

I just want to take, say, "The Fifth Element.mkv" and turn it into something my DVD player can read and that I can use on a PS3 later down the line. I've been trying Dr. DivX but I keep getting framerate and audio issues.... Buh!
