View Full Version : Want to get rid of Nero - need good burning software

I finally decided to get rid of all Nero software once and for all.
I just can't use it anymore because the developers have decided it should run a hidden service on my pc that checks my serial number online.
Sadly the hidden service (called Patent Activation) cannot be stopped - it even starts up in safe mode!
What do you call a perfectly hidden service that starts itself even when Windows is in safe mode? A service that secretly sends information from my computer to unknown places in the internet? A service that under all circumstances prevents its own deletion?
I call that a virus, and I don't like paying for software that installs viral components on my computer and deactivates my licence as soon as I install the software more than 3 times a month.

So, now I need alternatives for burning software. I am right now using CDBurner XP which is pretty good (and free!) but I'd like to try other alternatives as well. I have tried a few free products other than CDBurner XP but frankly I didn't even bother to burn a DVD with all of them because they were lacking so many things in the interface and options.
If you are not using Nero, what are you using? Is WinOnCD any good, or Ashampoo?

@theReal

Hi!

1) I totally concur with the other posters to this thread - (freeware) IMGBurn should be all you need for burning (The NERO suite, of course, includes many other programs in addition to "NERO Burning ROM").

2) From your opening diatribe:deactivates my licence as soon as I install the software more than 3 times a month.May I ask what necessitates such multiple reinstallations?

ImgBurn is one of the greatest pieces of free software ever. I burn 100% of my DVDs with it, and all CD Images.

However, I currently use Nero for burning multi-session MP3 CDs (daily pod-casts for the car).

If the Nero protection scheme now includes sneaky services, then to hell with giving them a dollar more. Time to come up with a free alternative.

Can someone recomend a good freeware program for burning multi-session CDs?

Khron; workaround would be to use CDRW media.

Does ImgBurn allow me to turn a VIDEO_TS folder into a 'proper DVD'...? I found myself installing the Nero 7 Essentials I got with my drive the other day only for this task. For everything else, ImgBurn truly is king.

imgburn knows you're building a DVD Video image if...
1. You add a folder containing a VIDEO_TS folder to the source box.
2. You add a VIDEO_TS folder to the source box.
3. You add a load of IFO/BUP/VOB files to the source box.
3b. if you add folder named 'anything' with bunch of IFO/BUP/VOB files

why pay for something when there is a better and free version?
imgburn is THE burning application. look at commercial softwares if and only if you dont like it or it doesnt do what you need.

I think the only reason I use Nero is that it can easily make an audio CD out of mp3's. Does ImgBurn have this capability?

@saint-francis

Converting .MP3s to audio CD format is not a function of burning.

As I said earlier in this thread:I totally concur with the other posters to this thread - (freeware) IMGBurn should be all you need for burning (The NERO suite, of course, includes many other programs in addition to "NERO Burning ROM").

I strongly recommend BurnAware. There's a Free Edition now (again).
