XviD is only a scientific *study* of how an MPEG-4 codec *could* be implemented, so there are no binaries. You have to compile the sourcecode yourself if you want to participate in research or look for a site where someone *accidentally* made the binary that he compiled for those research-purposes publicly accessible. ;)

I don't really think uManiac's site is 'questionable' in nature, particularly since it's perfectly legal in many parts of the world.

I was thinking of goose-stepping around posting a link, but who are we trying to kid :)

Right. But now we lost some words about XviD's nature and why there are no 'official' binaries. Might help, in case any forum-visitor is wondering.

It is a touchy subject, but then again the LAME people have been linking to "non-official" binary sites for years now. It would be nice to have a permanant sticky post detailing what exactly XviD's status is, for new readers. Can't say I know how to do that though..

Telling people that "BY USING XVID YOU *MAY* BE BREAKING THE LAW" might not be all that useful anyway, since a lot of people here might consider that as a prerequisite. I can't say I know many people who have paid their $2.50 licensing fee for DVD2AVI :)

well.. my site has lame binaries too ;) and nobody bothered me about this so far so I don't think that when I will eventually host some xvid binaries (stable beta or even a final release) there will be much of an uproar... unless they send over some C&D letters which I would of course publish so that you can flame whoever makes me take some soft down ;)
