How to demux a .divx file ? [Archive]

Hi guys,

I made a fancy .divX file of my cousins wedding (With Menu's using the DivX Author). So far so good. Worked fine and looked superb.

But then I made a copy for my aunt. She has a DivX DVD-Player but hers isn't DivX Ultra Certified.

I thought: It will work fine, just without my fancy Menu's of course. But it only works for the first part of the wedding (I Made 3 parts).

So is there any way to demux the .divx file again so I will get the separate parts ? I tried VirtualDub and a couple others but they only give me the first part of the damn thing.

Playing the file with the DivX Player is just fine but using VLan or any other software-player will give you the same result (Only the first part).

So is there any demuxing tool around that can handle this ?

You'd likely find it easier/simpler to go back to your original source material (presumably video captured from a camcorder)...

Yes...that would be my choice...if I still had the source. I may have a 3 disk DVD (Mpeg2) I made of this...but I still would like to know how to extract the stuff.

I'll try the DVD Flick prog.

Nope...doesn't work. Seems a like a nice prog otherwise.

Those .divx files or nothing but AVI files with a "wrong" file extension and few DivX-specific additions. You could try the AVI-Mux GUI (http://alexander-noe.com/video/amg/) program to demux:

You could try the AVI-Mux GUI program to demuxJust wondering if you've tried this yourself?

Yes. It worked just fine. There was no menu in this .divx file though. It was downloaded from Stage6, at the time the site was still up.

The "extract binary" command will demux the MEPG-4 elementary stream, which plays in MPlayer for example...

Perhaps I'm not understanding, but your screen grab indicates only one videostream, while the OP is apparently referring to MULTIPLE videostreams - which, as well as the existence of a menu, appears to be the causitive factor in the inability to demux all streams...

I just said that AVI-Mux GUI is able to extract the video streams from my .divx files.
Since I don't have any .divx files with menu, I cannot test whether it will work with such files too or not.
It was only a suggestion to give AVI-Mux GUI a try ;)

In case AVI-Mux GUI doesn't handle his file, he could also give MP4Box/YAMB (http://yamb.unite-video.com/download.html) a try...

I just did a quick Googlesearch and it appears that such a DivX structure (menu plus multiple video segments) cannot be demuxed.

It might be worth your while to post your question at the DivX website's forum...

I did post my question there too.

AviMuxGui didn't work (Worked only for the first segment).

Hm...wasn't there a CLI Prog called divxmuxgui or something a while ago ? *StupidGoogle

Both give me only the first part/segment to extract according to the runtime (1:13 h instead of 3:30h)

That happens when companies use proprietary formats/extensions :(

Another tool you could try is MKVToolnix (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVtoolnix) respectively MKVExtractGUI - it supports AVI's as input, it may work with your ".divx" file...

Why dont you try divxmenubuilder as made by tripod, that appears to hold all the assets in some sort of order.. (I cant make head or tail of it) but AFAIK it will take a divxproject as input.. then simply output three truncated streams/projects with only one video per thing.

I have use avidemux to change a *.divx to a real *.avi file. First I rename the file from *.divx to *.avi. Then I load it into avidemux, sometimes you will get an error because a audio-channel is used for something other than audio (subtitles and chapter info I think); just ignore this error and select the other audio channel. Then I set both the audio and video to copy and then save.

I thought he was trying to make a non-menu non-.divx version for his aunt; because she had a non-ultra Divx player. I could of misread it though.

Correct, he/me is trying to do that. The problem is within the multiple videostreams.

DivX should however tell the people that that kind of files wont play completly on Non-Ultra Devices. They say: "DivX Ultra-Files will allways work on Non-Ultra Devices just without menu's", but in this case (multiple segments/streams) only one stream works.

Does MKV already support menus? I thought it was a feature that they wanted to implement in the future, but I never saw a single MKV file with menus.

According to the Matroska web-site:

There aren't even any "official" specs for that I guess, because ".divx" is an proprietary extension to the AVI format...

No. There is no tool, but a workaround. See here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=135552). (Obviously nobody of you did a forum search before discussing the problem.... :devil:)

Well, I don't support this DivX proprietary policy at all, but, nevertheless, it's a fact that DivX/DivX Ultra is the only MPEG4 ASP format that is really widely spread among standalone video players. (Microsoft Windows is proprietary, too. Aren't we all using it, anyway?;))
