I am backing up videos with auto GK, in DGindex i get the message that the "Opening GOP is not closed. The first few frames may not be decoded correctly." This causes the final avi, divx or xvid video, to jump! fortunately the Vob that DGindex is having problems with is only with the final credits, but i am wondering if anyone knows how to fix the problem? The Vob file that causes the problem plays absolutely fine in any player, both home or pc, so its an odd problem in the latest DGindex when trying to convert to divx, and only with this particular Vob. I tried googling for an answer but found nothing so i thought id give this forum a go.. anyone? Thanks for any info

It's just a warning. An open GOP cannot cause the result to become jumpy. Probably, your problem is that the end credits are rendered at 30fps and you are using IVTC (or Force Film) to get the main movie back to film rate. Applying IVTC to a video section will make it jumpy.
There are a lot of threads about handling such hybrid video, i.e., video containing both film and non-film sections.

so i need to convert each vob (credits and movie) with different dgindex settings to get non jumping divx movie credits, and then perhaps find a avi joining program for both divx files to get a good end result..? Im just wondering if to stop the jumping, i only need to change the DGindex settings? The message comes up when i first open the credits in dgindex, when playing the credits from it trying out different settings, the program will always show them jumping! Forced film is not on, video settings are 32bit mmx, honor pulldown flags instead of forced film, tv scale.

Im just wondering if to stop the jumping, i only need to change the DGindex settings? I can only guess, because you haven't provided stream samples. But if it's a case of hybrid video, then you can't just process them separately and then join them, because one will be 24fps and the other 30fps.
The message comes up when i first open the credits in dgindex, Ignore the warning. It is irrelevant.

Forced film is not on, video settings are 32bit mmx, honor pulldown flags instead of forced film, tv scale. So you render the credits section with honor pulldown and no IVTC and it is jumpy? Then something else must be going on. Maybe you are processing with incorrect field order. To stop the guessing games, use DGIndex to demux to M2V the start of the credits section. Get about 10-20Mbytes. Post a link to the M2V. Also give me the exact Avisynth script that you use when you obtain the jumpy result.

The credits always jump when i preview the vob files with dgindex, when either forced film is on or off, and honor pulldown is on or off, it makes no difference. The credits are the last few minutes of Vob 1.4, and all of 1.5. The last part of the movie makes up the first section of Vob 1.4, and is absolutely fine. its just the credits from the end of that Vob that jump, and all of the last Vob. Ps cant post anything on here as no proper net, im using a mobile phone on here at the moment

thanks anyway, its not a big problem since it only effects the credits, i just found it odd that the original credits when viewed on the dvd would work fine, yet one and a half vobs which make up the entire credits, nothing more or less, when converted, would jump. Using this mobile phone i can usually only download around a couple of mb before errors start to occur, even with a good reception, so an upload would prob be even less since it is usually a slower process. Thanks

You're not giving a consistent story. Once you say "jumpy when I preview in DGIndex" and then "jumpy when converted". If it is the latter, you are probably screwing up the field order. If the former, maybe your PC doesn't have the horsepower to play it smoothly. Remember that DGIndex uses it's own not very optimized decoder.

Surely it could still be both, as a result of using the wrong settings from the very start, regarding the end credits? I understand that it could well have been one or the other for seperate reasons, but like you say, its probably the wrong initial settings for the video as a whole, with the credits encoded in a different way to the main movie, causing the problem for both the test and final output. I have managed to convert other home videos as a test, and this is the only one i have had a problem with. encoding a very small Vob (just the credits) gives the same jumpy result...- im pretty sure the main movie wouldve been more of a strain on the systems memory and processor, than a fairly simple end credit scene, with nothing but rising text on a black background. I am using a very low end laptop, although it is less than a yr old (dual core 1.5 ghz processor, 2 gig memory). Its running vista, but since this is the only source dvd i have had a problem with, ill guess its probably not a windows compatibility problem. I do have an xp desktop (1.6gig, although not dual core, from 2001, with upgraded 2gig memory). I may give xp a go tomorrow to see if it gives the same result-ill get back to you on that! Lol. thanks

Dude, you still haven't said whether it is "jumpy when I preview in DGIndex" or "jumpy when converted to DivX".
Since you refuse to provide the information needed to help you, I'll go watch the Olympics instead. Bye!

So you're saying both.
Go find an internet connection and upload a source sample.
