Newegg Open Box

Does anyone have anything to say about newegg's open box policy? I'm debating buying a desktop from them that is open box and I was just wondering if anyone had anything good/bad to say about it.

Per the NewEgg website, the following is applicable to "recertified" products. I'd suggest to you that the very last line is what you should evaluate regarding the specific desktop unit you are considering:

What are Recertified products?
Products described as “Recertified” are products which have been retested to ensure compliance with original manufacturer specifications in function and for purposes related to warranty.

Recertified products typically:

• Have never been used, where the outside factory seal has been broken. This can be due to a cancelled order for example.

• Are items returned to the original manufacturers that were used in field tests, sales displays or demonstrations.

•Products that have been returned for warranty service, which have been brought to manufacturer specifications.

• Are products that have been returned for reasons other then defect. These items are sent to the manufacturer for inspection and testing. The passing products are then repackaged as recertified.

• Are items where the box was damaged in shipment and is then returned to the manufacturer.

• May include a limited manufacturer warranty – see items product page on the website for details

Sounds a bit like gambling to me. You've no way of knowing why the product was returned in the first place. I have bought open box before, but only from Brick and Mortar stores where you can examine or test the item.

I have purchased open box items before from newegg, never a full desktop system though, and have even recieved them DOA. All I had to do was RMA it and ship it back, and was refunded my money as they didnt have any more of them as open box. SO, if you go this route, be prepared to pay to ship it back if it doesnt work, but there customer service is wonderful, so I dont forsee you actually having a problem getting a refund though, if needed.

Not from newegg, but a shop in NZ I bought a PCI sound card that had been opened. When I plugged it in it did not work. After that, neither did my PC. Because I couldn't get another AGP mobo of similar spec I needed a new mobo, new chip, new ram and new GPU. The replacements I ordered as new from a variety of places were also opened - so I returned them for replacement. The ensuing saga is another story that took one month to resolve. The point being that it would have been better to have bought the original item absolutely brand new and unopened. There was a reason the item was returned, and no matter what you are told about how well it was tested - you risk finding out for yourself why the item was returned, and in my case it was a very expensive way to find out.

True, but maybe it was becuase the person bought the wrong thing? I've only ever returned something to Newegg for refund twice, and both times becuase I bought the wrong thing.

AS for whether I would buy an open box product from Newegg... I think it depends on what it is.
Something with a lot of delicate moving parts, like a printer? Hell no!
A SCSI adaptor card? If it works, why not?

A fulll desktop PC... probably not.

I agree, I'd get a factory refurbished one before an open box. The refurb has been tested by the manufacturer.
