Metadata in WMP

I used mp4UI to add some meta-data to an MP4 file I made with MP4Box (x264 video + AAC), but while it is retained as far as mp4UI is concerned, I do not see it in what I think may be assumed to be the most common player, WMP.

What is the secret of getting title & author etc to show in WMP?

Notwithstanding the majority of mugs using WMP, I am also concerned with making sure metadata of archived video files online is correct for search engine purposes.

WMP doesnt support MP4 files... get a real player with native support for MP4 files and metadata.
there are tons of them... even free.

So even WMP 11 doesn't natively support MPEG-4? It does support AVC in AVI? Shows how little I care to know about Windows Media.

I am suddenly confused. Is AVI a better choice for distribution?

WMP does not support anything natively, expect for WMV and MPEG-1 :rolleyes:

AVC/H.264 in AVI is generally a bad idea. Use MP4 or MKV...

However all you need is ffdshow-tryouts (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941) + Haali's Media Splitter (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/) to enable MPEG-4 ASP and MPEG-4 AVC support from AVI/MP4/MKV :)

I'd go with Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=170561) though, if I need a DirectShow-based player...

Why did I just get a warning from a mod that the OP above violated Doom9 rule # 16 (that "instructions by the moderator team are to be followed")? What instructions and when please, and what is wrong with the post?

Guys, I get WMP is junk. I don't care, I avoid it. What I care about right now however is distributing AVC video to a diverse audience in a way that is compatible with as many systems in the wild as possible. I had assumed that putting it in a generic MPEG-4 container was the best solution.

Put your AVC/H.264 streams into MP4 or MKV container and everything is fine.

well, tell your "customers" or whatever they can use VLC to play MP4 or MKV files. no codecs, no problems...
WMP is a the worst player ever created...

LOL your opinion of the standards of most "regular" folk is way too optimistic. If it's not inline Flash and WMP can't handle it, it's as good as useless...

Should I be looking at VC1 instead for this purpose?

I think if you ask for support in hardware players, then MP4 still has much wider support than MKV. However MKV seems to be the "scene" standard for H.264 rips...

WMP does not support the AVC/H.264 without additional filters. You could use the WMV or MPEG-1 format, but those are not AVC, obviously.

Yes - rule #16 is "instructions by the moderator team are to be followed". I did not receive any instructions from a moderator. If this is meant to implicitly refer to the rules in general, then which did I violate? Be specific. I can't for the life of me see what I have done wrong.

Yeah I know, that's why I mentioned Flash. It's one option but I don't want an embedded option for this particular video, it's a large file, want folk to be able to download it how they like.

I'll just use a lower res embedded WMV and FLV for the noobs, and keep the MP4 for those that know what it is.

Oh by the way. Metadata. QuickTime recognizes it, so I guess I can assume that mp4UI did a good job. Does anyone know if the SEs can spider that? E.g. Yahoo video search.
