a DVD player that downscales HD material :D I have heard of xVid players but never x264 players. Popcorn hour would probably be your best bet.

I did a little searching. It looks like your best guarantee would be to get a Blu-ray player. Some spout MPeg-4 AAC but there is no way of telling if that means AVC. Maybe a little digging would reveal what settings you could use with said players, but I had little luck.

Popcorn Hour doesn't have an optical drive, so that may not be what you want.
For bluray player encoding, RipBot264 outputting bluray with bluray profile works in the players I've tested, you can get the command line for each pass from the temp directory.
Bluray players with profile 2.0 support, which has ethernet, are just starting to come out. PS3 also supports profile 2.0 along with streaming.
