Collaboration on DVD Ripping Guide

Anyone want to collaborate on a guide for people that have problems ripping DVD's?

It seems the same questions get asked every 5 or 6 post's "Help Ripping X DVD".

I'd be more than happy to put my methods up but it'd be nice to just have a collection of things people can try before they post asking to have their hands held.....

Not wanting to throw cold water on this, but there are hundreds of guides around already, and there'll never be a definitive one, since people prefer their own methods and programs.

I think it is a good idea and a noble effort of yours to do so. Unfortunetly, the downside seems to be that a potential fair portion of those asking for hand holding help. Most likely can't be bothered to use the Search Function in the first place in order to find your Rip Guide. Let alone bother to take the time to read and understand what you have spent time and effort on to write. Not when they can quickly and easily start their own 'Help Me!' thread.

Did not mean for that to come across as jaded as it may seem :-). If you take the time to write and post it I will gladly read it over. I'm always willing to learn something new and try an improved workflow process if available.

Ripping as in backup, not conversion.

What i'm more interested in doing is creating a document that outlines the tools and methods to backup a DVD when the usual Shrink and Decrytor won't work.....

I have already started, not much so far but abit... its stored in my google docs if anyone is interested.....

I know what you mean, and it's frustrating as hell to see the exact same answer's over and over!

PS not expecting people to find it, but it would be nice if there was a post that covered all the methods that could be referenced.

Generally speaking it's something that's so simple to do that I'd imagine most people wouldn't think it warrants a full blown guide.

The majority of peoples' queries are as a result of using out of date software that doesn't cope with the latest titles or awkward discs that require even the latest software to be updated.

Needless to say problems relating to titles that require ripping software to be updated will have to be reported via the normal channels and can't unfortunately be rectified by following a guide.

Rather than using DVD Decrypter as a starting point my recommended choices for the most comprehensive ripping capabilities (i.e. does the most discs) would either be the freeware version of DVDFab HD Decrypter (on it's own) or (if you're feeling flush :)) DVD Decrypter in conjunction with AnyDVD.

The titles that either of these choices can't handle will be very few and far between.

Essentially, as of today (DVD95Copy now being gone), that would only require stating, "Download the LATEST version of of (freeware) DVDFab HD Decrypter or (commercial) AnyDVD"

I don't mind working on this myself, i was just trying to see if anyone would like to contribute as i know my few methods that work with just about every dvd but there are others which i do not know or use and hence shouldn't coment on as i will get it wrong!

I agree with Setarip_old.

1. Update to latest DVDFab HD Decrypter or AnyDVD.

2. In the event that that doesn't yet work, report it and wait for a fix.

I can't see how that could be sufficiently expanded into a guide but I'm more than happy to be proven wrong.

Don't take it too badly.

Anyone that's prepared to help others is always off to a good start in my books.

Some of the more technical aspects of popular ripping programs are not terribly well documented and you might like to look there for inspiration.

For example the official guide for DVDFab tells you what the PathPlayer settings are but it doesn't tell you when to use which settings and in what circumstances.

Cull the various forums for popularly asked or interesting questions that aren't covered by the existing guides and I'm sure you'll find some good source material.
