Help wanted with MeGUI settings.

I'm currently encoding a low-motion video (DVD source) into AVC (using x264) - the video is the Kama Sutra guide...

The video is about 55 minutes - and I want it compressed fairly small to fit onto a 512MB USB flash drive.

What MeGUI settings do people recommend?

i can safely assume it coz your question has little or no sense at all and that means you dont even know where to start.

Found a preset in MeGUI that seemed to work fine... cheers.

VC-1 encoders seem many times faster than x264?The Microsoft VC-1 encoder is one of the slowest encoders I have ever seen; not only is it something like 5 times slower (http://i34.tinypic.com/3176syu.png) on fastest settings despite VC-1 being a less complex format, but on slower settings it takes 2-3 hours to encode a 3 minute video. And despite this the result ends up looking pretty crappy (http://mirror05.x264.nl/Dark/website/compare.html).

If x264 is going slower than that, you must have chosen some really crazy settings.

that's why i said you need to read some guides.
you cant obtain a more quality than the source.
all you can tweak is the speed/loss of quality ratio using different settings.
probably you would obtain the same quality in less than a tent of the time you needed to produce your encode.
what preset/profile did you use? what kind of source (details please) you need to compress?

Does x264 usually take longer than 3 hours (per 1 hour of video)?

I'm using a Pentium M 1.6Ghz with 2GB RAM.

I'm using a Pentium M 1.6Ghz with 2GB RAM.x264 is incredibly scalable--it can encode at nearly 200fps for standard definition on a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo... and it can encode at less than 1fps. This all depends on your settings.

On your computer, you could almost certainly get it going faster than the VC-1 encoder without sacrificing much quality.
