Help with WMA9 problem

Hey everyone, I exhausted Google and the forum search trying to find an answer to this one, though I found some with a similar problem, just no resolution.

I have some older .wmv files and some of them play with audio, and some play, but without audio. The ones that work all have the codec listed as wma2, Windows Media Audio 9.1, while those whose audio fails have the codec listed as wma2, Windows Media Audio 9. The files that work have the audio decoded and played, but the files that won't play the audio have "lost buffers" in VideoLAN. I've tried VideoLAN and Windows Media Player.

I wanted to get an update of the codec, but couldn't find one at Microsoft so I upgraded to Media Player 11 in hopes of a fix, but it didn't change anything.

Does anyone have any ideas of what might be going on and how to fix it?

Short of that, I don't usually edit wmv files, so does anyone know good (small, simple, free, like virtualdub) software that I could rip out the audio, transcode to another format, and mux it back in?

I didn't create the files, a relative did, of several family get-togethers. I never would have used that format for anything. Give me something open or well-defined and standard like Xvid or mpeg-2 any day. My cousins answer was, "they work on my computer," so...I'm not super worried about it, they can output me a copy to dvd nowadays anyways. I just would have liked to know the answer and find a resolution.
