There are rumors that Youtube is using Xvid AVC to encode their H.264 videos. That's all.

Or wait, what? After a short google apparent the XviD project wrote an AVC codec... I haven't even heard of it ;|

I figured XviD is ASP only... what a confusing name ;|

If Youtube is using Xvid AVC, then Xvid AVC is an awful piece of crap.

If they're not, then its vaporware :D

Well, since DivX is (was?) ASP only, and then XviD, the name being the inverse of DivX, showed up, also an ASP codec.

So... XviD should be exclusively ASP ;-;

DivX or XviD do not directly mean MPEG4-ASP at all.
they're free to do what they want with their logos. and btw, what's not clear in the XviD AVC name? To me, it means xvid team avc/H.264 implementation.

Okay, yeah, it's technically a logo, but you know what I mean. XviD, DivX and similar codecs mean ASP to many people. Sticking AVC after those names is just weird.

No, first version of DivX was MPEG4 V3 from MS crack and not MPEG4 ASP. DivX and XviD are only logo.

PS: Work very well this Acer One. If you want optimise x264 for intel Atom ... I can make test.

Another maintained open source AVC encoder might be cool, but there's no big rush. We have x264, which destroys everything else so far in every situation I've tested :D

Actually vc-2 is the SMPTE name of Dirac.
VC-3 is another name for AVID DNxHD intra-only format very similar to MJPEG or DV, but without some weird constraints.

My point was that for most people, DivX and XviD mean MPEG-4 ASP... that's all. Arguing semantics is very stupid.

Sharktooth's point is important because DivX 3 was NOT MPEG-4 ASP compliant. Many ASP-decoding standalones will play those videos, but they don't have to.

...I know, but you guys just keep insisting on that. It doesn't matter: most people relate DivX and XviD to ASP, not anything else. A good example is how I was puzzled after seeing "Xvid AVC"....
