xvid encoding speeds compared to x264

So I figured trying out xvid instead should prove to be much faster encoding than the x264 encodes I've been doing.
To my surprise...while the first pass was about 8 fps...and 2nd pass was less than 2 fps. Which, actually is slower than when I encode with x264. This is using megui, and the built-in template for xvid called Xvid 2 pass HQ

So that seems to suggest that the bottleneck here isn't the encoder...but the decoder? The source is a m2ts 1920 x 1080 file...

Ok something is seriously wrong with my computer. heh

1. Xvid is singlethreaded. Its multithreaded builds are really not very efficient.

2. Xvid is really not that fast. On its slower settings, it really is not very speedy at all. Most people remembering Xvid being "fast" remember its speed on standard-def content, and compare that to x264's speed on HD video. But when you take Xvid and throw 1080p into it, suddenly its 6 times slower, since the resolution is 6 times higher.

I don't think thats completely the case (#2) I have encoded SD on both x264 and xVid. I remember Xvid being faster but the quality was nowhere near as good. The times I remember x264 preforming better are when I drop my settings down by a fair amount.

Im not saying Xvid is better, only that its best was faster then x264's best. (though, as I said before, x264s would look miles better and the same bitrate)

it isn't? I would have thought that x264 with tesa, psyRDO, trelis,.. would be slower,...
