Hello,
I recently had to replace an older NEC dvd-r drive due to the fact that it only burned 8x and most blank media is 16x and the drive would not recognize the media at all. Anyway I replaced the drive with a Sony dru-840a and it works but at a much slower rate than the older drive. DVD shrink takes almost twice as long, even disc to disc CD burning is very slow. It seems the right drivers are updated and I connected it the same as the old drive. i was curious to any help/insight. The computer is about 4 years old. May this be part of the problem? Thanks.

Hi!

It sounds like your burner, if it's an internal drive, is set to PIO (Sloooooooow) mode. If so, you have to reset it to DMA (FAST) mode, as follows:

In the Device Manager (via the Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager), you simply have to remove the applicable IDE channel (Click on "IDE...Controllers") and let your computer reset it to DMA as follows:
Right click on the pertinent channel in Device Manager
Click on uninstall
Reboot
After rebooting go back to Device Manager and change the setting to "DMA if available"...

@RunningSkittle

Hi!It sounds more like the drive is riplocked...1) I've owned several SONY DVD burners. None was ever riplocked.

2) I haven't heard of a riplocked burner, of any brand, in a couple of years, have you?

Yes, the new samsung MTK drives for one.

I know for a fact the samsung SH-S203B, likely the most popular burner on the market, is riplocked... as I happen to own one. Codeking over at CDfreaks has a patched firmware to fix that, and improve various functions as well.

The Sony DRU-840A mentioned by the OP is actually virtually the same drive as the SH-S202J, which is just a SH-S203B with a PATA connection. Firmwares for all three are (somewhat) cross-compatible, and all three are riplocked.

Note:
* Also supported is the Sony DRU-830A and DRU-840A.

Good news for the OP :)

Hello,
1st thanks for the help. It seems to go a bit faster. Pardon my ignorance but what exactly is "riplocked" and is it fixable? Again, thank you for all the help and info.

Means that the drive will limit its read speed when it detects CSS encrypted content.

Follow that link I provided, and patch your drives firmware.

ok...I downloaded the Patch Utility file but am not sure what to use when it asks to load firmware. Did I miss the link on the thread to the firmware it uses?

The utility us just the program to write the new firmware to the drive's eeprom you still need to get the appropriate firmware for your drive.

Don't take offence to this but if you are having trouble working out what to do, you may be better off getting help from someone who does, you really need to be careful with how you patch your drive, read the instructions very carefully, choose the correct firmware for your drive, make sure your exact model is listed as supported by the firmware you choose, and make sure you don't power off deliberatly or accidently during the flash, you will kill the drive!
