As I'm in a good mood today, here's a goodnight story for you kids out there. A long time ago in this very galaxy, a group of DVD backup pioneers had a vision. Sadly,however, before they could get to a browser to tell anyone about it, a terribly stupid catastrophe occurred, and the idea was lost forever. This is not their story. It's a story about a few DVD backup enthusiasts who managed to write a working MS MPEG4 + MP3 backup method without sync problems... They managed to do it without the help of the MPAA or RIAA, without Pamela Andersons philosophical approach, er, you get the point.

BTW, some dude, with the nick "Gej" mentioned a new Divx codec, does someone knows something about it, it seems that it is based on some sort of beta MS codec. :D

1 CD Can't Contain The 642,183K Video + 84,563K Audio.

It Can Contain The 514,312K Video + 84,563K Audio and If It Works I Can Even Have Space for Higher Then 950 kps MPEG-4)

Simpler way to do the same !
1- For the Compression of the video It's Ok ! but prefer DIVX MPEG4 codec It's the same as MS one but Work OK on All config ! (http://dvdsoft.virtualave.net/DIVXcodec.zip)

2- For the Sound I recommend a Graphedit Way to extract the WAV using The MakeWAV package (http://members.xoom.com/mpeg2avi/makewave.zip) U need the LSX spliter and WinDVD Audio Filter (Dolby Licenced... The best for audio in my mind). Watch the docs inside the package !

3- For packing MP3 I recommand The Radium Fraunaufer MP3 codec. (Sorry no link yet...)

4- For Put Video and Audio together and Pack it the MP3 in one shot I use Virutal Dub (http://www.concentric.net/%7Epsilon/virtualdub_dl.html)

5- For tweak the frame Rate use AVIFrate (http://www.inmatrix.com/files/avifrate_download.html)

6- For watching Use MiniDVD player from our polish friend (http://www.pik-net.pl/~jolay/html/mdvd_player.html)

Here is what i do, I made a little faq on it.

How to convert DVD to ASF in full resolution , version 1.0
(and without any commercial software too)

One, let me say the results are totaly stunning, we basicly get FULL DVD resolution/quality in a 650meg file ready for burning to one CDR. No 352 lowres VCDs on two cds here boy.

System Requirements...
1. P400 and above (celeron450+) (no amdk2s since their FP is real crap)
2. about 3 gig of HD space free.
3. mpeg2avi
4. DVD drive
5. dodsrip or decss to copy VOB to HD. 6. mpeg4 codecs from Windows Media Tools (beta codecs or ones that allow avis to work that are not licence crippled)

There are 3 basic steps to making your own movie rip
Step 1. copy content to hard drive
Step 2. decompress video and recompress to AVI with mpeg4 ,and decode audio to a wav file
Step 3. combine the two into an AVI and convert to ASF

Lets begin...


Step 1.

Using DeCSS or DODSrip, copy the relevant VOB files to your harddrive as one combined VOB file not exceeding 4gig (unless NTFS). So usualy this would be files Vts_01_1.vob to Vts_01_4.vob, in cases where a movie might span 5 vob files you can do files 1 to 3 as one part, and 4 to 5 as a second part.

Total time: 15mins


Step 2.

Recompressing Video
Use mpeg2avi here , there are a few things first that must be worked out. We need to know if its Widescreen or not, and if its aspect ratio shifted or not. So lets use our little table below for the right settings/args to pass to mpeg2avi.

Widescreen , Aspect ratio adjusted
mpeg2avi -b movie.vob -3Y 392 -1 720 320 -f5 -o8 movie.avi
Widescreen , normal
mpeg2avi -b movie.vob -1 720 320 -f5 -o8 movie.avi
4:3 Sized
(NOTE: you could use -1 640x288 if you dont mind cropping the side 5% which shouldnt matter. This will allow more bandwidth for other pixels)
mpeg2avi -b movie.vob 720 480 -f5 -o8 movie.avi


Now in places where we crop to 720 pixels wide, we can optionly crop to 640 if you wish to save a bit more bandwidth and feel its too wide.

Codec Selection: Select MS-Mpeg4-v3, use value of 20 for crispness to allow for fast motion, and for compression level , use this, rate = (88740/minutes_length), so a 90 minute movie would have 980kbps, and for 2hr movie its about 740kbps, inclusive of audio, so from that subtract your estimated audio bandwidth (normaly 56k).
Note: for 90 min or less movies, it might be wise to reduce the video rate by enough to allow for 96kbps or so audio rate so that we may have even better quality audio at little expense if any of video. So a 90min movie might have us 96kbps audio with 880kbps video. Which fits to 650meg.

Total time - 5hrs per 2hr movie on Celeron 450mhz
R Decompressing Audio
For this, we have two ways. Either use ac3dec with "ac3dec file.vob file.wav" and select raw PCM at 48000hz Stereo , we could select mp3 here but its best not to since we might have to adjust parameters later that only work in raw PCM wav files. Or use graphedt with the commercial codecs to convert more accurately. Generaly commercial codecs are faster and better, but my version of ac3dec is approaching commercial speeds now. (http://members.xoom.com/cheekyb0y/ac3decode.html)
Graphedt steps - first, get and install the XingDVD audio codec, DO NOT ever use the InterVideo Ac3 decode codec,(windvd) which also is part of dvd2mpg, it makes audio files that are not 100% 48000 in sync with the original sound, and so cause a lot of out of sync errors.
You also need the WAVDEST filter which is part of MAKEWAVE from members.xoom.com/mpeg2avi/ website. Then select render file from the FILE menu then once you have a few boxes, delete the video component and the last audio component. Then add WAVEDEST and FILEWRITE directshow filters from the Insert Filters menu, join then up, and hit PLAY. And its done.
Total time - 60mins for 2hr source movie.

NOTE: we can do both the above audio decoding and video recompressing at the same time to make use of resources better, ie, start and go to sleep or watch a few dvd's.

Step 3.

Heres the more technical and possibly the more difficult step if other programs above have bugs in generating our data. But it can be quick and easy.
First and most important, we must make sure the video and audio are in sync, two things could possibly cause bad syncs, 1. wrong initial audio offset caused by mpeg2avi, or 2. wrong fps causing a drifting in sync as you go. (ivaudio.ax is faulty)
Generaly with xing codec its 100% ok and therefore not tweeking is needed for fps changes other than the default 23.976
Ok, load up the AVI into VirtualDub, and select Audio->Wav file to add an audio track to the video. Hit play or seek forward about 60seconds till you can find someone talking and watch the sync. If its in sync, great we need not adjust the audio offset, if its out, then you must select the Audio->Interleve menu to adjust the offset by possibly 2000 to 4000ms.
Now seek foward towards the last 5% of the movie and hit play, here we find out if its in sync because of the FPS value. If its out of sync then bad luck, we must edit this with AVIFRATE from inmatrix.com. For every second the audio is late compared to the video, subtract 0.0035 from the FPS, and for every second the video is late compared to the audio, add 0.0035 to the FPS. Edit the fps in AVIFRATE, then re-load the avi into VirtualDub and re-check. Keep doing this until your are satisfied that its syned 100% ok at the start and at the end of the movie. This could take anything from 10mins to 2hours if you need fine adjustments. Its up to you to make the best judgement , it takes practice, so for now its a bitch. Until mpeg2avi decodes 100% ok streams then we have to do this crap.

Once ok, select File->save as ext. Save this as a direct copy video and direct copy audio track.
Now start another copy of VirtualDub, and load the new avi into VirtualDub, and then select an audio compresion codec to your liking (mp3 at 56kbps 24000hz or whatever you like). Then hit File->Save As, final_movie.avi


Step 4.

run your dosshell and type this in


vidtoasf.exe -in movie.avi -leadtime 5000 -seekable on -optimize 1 -out
moviename-DVDRIP.asf


Now your avi is turned into a full publishable .asf format file for every one to view and watch.

TIPS
To mimick the DVD experience, you may wish to copy the DVD menus into a html style interface with image maps at the buttons to go to other menus. To do this make screen snapshots of all screens with PowerDVD and same them all to jpegs, then make the HTML pages with any commercial web editor and make the jpegs as the pages pic with an image map at the button coords. At the PLAY MOVIE icon, link it to your movie.asf file. You also may wish to convert the trailers and/or special areas too. Then you could burn them all to cd and have a dvd like replica.

i'm afraid that the use of your ""DIVX MPEG4"" codec is not a fine advice:
1) asf or avi file will not be readable on other config without this divxmpeg4 installed.
2) you'll miss the specific very interesting opportunity to change MPEG4 decoding properties
with win media player, ie: cpu quality,colour, brightness, contrast ,hue
=> true full operational MPEG4 codec it the one of M$ MPG4C32.DLL version 4.00.0.3688

Why Does 2 AVI's with the Same Number of Frames Have Different Sizes?

Why Not Always Encode First to 30fps and Only Later Change the fps with AVI Frame Rate Changer?

(Which Leaves the AVI File Size Alone)

That Way You Get 24fps AVI in a Size of 30fps AVI (Which is Much Smaller).

What am I Missing Here?

Only a little apreciation.
If you use 720x304 you get the better 2.35 approach(2.3684) than 720x320 (2,25).
And for little black lines around the film I use 688x288 (2.3888).
At this moment I'm ripping at 100% crisp and 1200 kbps minimum (depends film duration) for Mpeg4 video and 128kbps 48000Hz for Mp3 audio, putting the whole thing in ASF format in 2 CD's.

I Don't Know Why, But the Fact I Could Manually Enter a Number in AVI Frame Rate Changer Passed Me By.
I've Changed the 514,312K AVI from 30.000 fps to 23.978 fps Using AVI Frame Rate Changer and Merged It with the MP3 Audio.
(Using Graph Editor)

I Couldn't See Any Difference Between the Final.avi Made Out of the 642,183K AVI (Encoded Directly to 23.978 fps) + the MP3 Audio and the Final.avi Made Out of the 514,312K (Encoded First to 30 fps and Only Later Changed to 23.978 Using AVI Frame Rate Changer) + the Same MP3 Audio

The Only Difference I Could See is the Saving of 127,871K for 90 Minutes of Movie.

The 514,312K Video (MPEG-4 100% Crispness, 950kBps) and the 84,563K 128kbps, 48kHz, Stereo for Mp3 audio Can Fit in 1 CD and Then Some.

I Can Now Increase the Data Rate of the MPEG-4 Compression from 950kBps.

The Way I See It the Steps are:

1. VOB 2 WAV 2 MP3 (Check Length in Seconds)

2. VOB 2 AVI (Always to 30fps).

3. Use AVI Frame Rate Changer to Change the fps to "Video Frames / Length of Final.wav (in Seconds)

4. Merge the Audio and the Video.

It Will Be Synced.


When Loading the Video and Later the Audio in VirtualDub and Pressing Play the Audio and the Video Where Out of Sync (Even Though When Joining Them with Filter Graph Editor and Running the AVI They Where Perfectly Synced).

Why Encode to a Larger File When You Have AVI Frame Rate Changer?

Would it be possible for someone to put up a sample of this technique? Say, one minute of the process? I question just how good an asf would look at this data rate. I'm doing encoding with DVD2Mpeg, but I'm curious just how nice this method looks...I have yet to see an example of it anywhere.
If possible, post a bitrate appropriate to one CD that would contain an average length movie.

Why not do a sample your self but only 2minutes of footage? Trust me, it looks as good as DVD.
Now regarding the fps issue, when using mpeg2avi it doesnt matter what you choose does it? because its just a number in the avi that says the fps, so its a 1:1 frame conversion, its fps is just like avifrate isnt it?

Dark, sure 1200+128 is good for 2 CDs, i guess we can either do 2 CDs or 1CD, it still looks good on 1 cd I think.
Just done 8mm to a 644,000k ASF (with credits, hmmm damn wasted data) it looks quite good for a 123min rip. Im not sure about also getting the special featurette making of... skip that.

It's a Fact that AVI Frame Rate Changer Doesn't Change the Original AVI Size After Changing fps's.

When Encoding with Mpeg2AVI (and I Think Other Softwares as Well)the Higher the fps Rate is the Smaller the File Size You Get.

With This Logic If You Encode to 100fps (or Higher) You'll Get a Smaller File. Later You Use AVI Frame Rate Changer to Change It (Lets Say 23.976) and You'll Still Have the Same Size.

I'll Have to Try It...

I Don't Understand Why AVIs with the Same Number of Frames Have Different Sizes.

Maybe It Has Something to Do with the Compression Codec?!?!

There Must Be a Number Between 100 and 1000 That Will Give the Best Result for Good Video Quality and High Data Rate (Like 3000K).

The Fact is that When Choosing Higher Number for f7 (DwRate/dWScale) You Save A Lot of Hard Disk Space Not to Mention CD...

100fps AVI at 3000K Data Rate Has About the Same Size of 30fps AVI at 1000K Date Rate.

If That is the Case Then You Only Have to Use Mpeg2avi Once, After It Finishes Encoding, Check the Number of Frames a VOB Has (You Don't Need to Know the Number in Advance).

The Only Thing that is Left to Do is to Use AVI Frame Changer and Choose the Right fps for Audio/Video Sync (Which Again = Video Frames (Which You Now Know) / Length of Demuxed WAV, in Seconds).

This fps Value Makes the Audio/Video Sync.

Am I Right or Is It to Good to Be True?

Why bother with AVI Frame Rate Changer? All codecs use data rate as kbits/sec, no matter how many frames are in that one sec. So encoding 50fps @ 1000 kbits/sec is the same as 25fps @ 500 kbits/sec. In any case each frame gets ~ 20 kbits. As for syncing A&V I get perfect sync if I mux Audio & Video with VirtualDub (23.976fps & Radium mp3 codec for audio).

It is Much Smaller then 30fps AVI.

Where Did You Get the 20Kbits for a Frame Number?

As for syncing A&V I'll Have to Try It, But What I'm Interested Right Now is How to Squeeze as Much Video Data as I Can into 1 CD.

The Data Rate in the MPEG-4 Codec is Not the Same Number as the Number You Get When You Check the AVI File Properties.

You Can See the Real Data Rate the AVI Has

Data Rate = File Size (in KiloBytes) / Duration of the AVI (in Seconds).

The Duration Will Change if You'll Change the fps Rate and that Will Change the Data Rate as Well.

I Really Don't Know What the Data Rate Number in the MPEF-4 Codec Means.

Any Way, Can Someone Please Encode Using MPEG2AVI to 100fps (f7 100000/1000) and Post the Results So I'll Know if It's Possible to Make Smaller Files with Higher Quality.

It Seems that 100fps is Good and 200fps is Not So Good.

Data rate:
Mpeg4: kilobits per second
Avi file properties: kilobytes per second
(kilobits per second / 8)

I have encoded ~ 10 min of video:
Video: Mpeg4: 600 kbit/sec (75 KB/sec)
Audio: Mp3 160 kbit/sec (16 KB/sec)

I got the file ~ 53 MB large:
91 KB/sec (75KB + 16KB = 91KB) -> ~122 min/cd.

Since you are encoding a file with a fixed number of frames, by increasing the fps you are actually decreasing the data each frame gets. I think (because I don't know how Mpeg encodes frames) you get the same result if you increase the fps or decrease the data rate. Decreasing the data rate also means faster encoding.

Whts happening is that if you change the FPS, the key frames change.
So a KEYF of 1/8seconds for 24fps makes a KEYframe every 192 frames, but 100 fps makes a keyframe every 800 frames. Thats why higher fps = larger.

Try same FPS but longer Keyframe settings to 12 or 30seconds (tho idealy KEYF of 5 is more logical, nicer video)

I'm glad you guys are onto this mpeg-4 encoding thing, and figuring out all the sync issues and such.
Sorry if this is off topic for this thread but...I was wondering if any of you had considered Windows Media Audio (WMA)for your audio codec versus MP3? A 64kbps/44khz WMA file gives approximately the same quality as a 128kbps/44khz mp3, do some sample encoding and compare for yourself, use Windows Media Tools, or Winamp has an output plug-in that writes WMA files.

However I don't know if it supports 48000hz sampleing rate, maybe only 44100. I don't know if that's an issue.

but it could give you another 40 Meg of data for the video, at little or no sound degradation.

This may sound a little bit newbie-ish, but I was wondering how to mix the video (avi) and audio (mp3) together in GraphEdit. I've done it with avi and wav, but I don't know how to get the mp3 in there. I might be doing something wrong, would somebody please help? Thanks in advance!

OllieBG: You have to encode .mp3 as .wav. Only Mp3 Producer, Audioactive Production Studio and Radium mp3 codec can do this as far as I know. Mp3 Producer sets bad bitrate info so you can't sync A&V. So does the Radium mp3 codec, but VirtualDub can correct this. It's your choice...
As for .wma audio: I got audio in .asf (WM Encoder) and video in another .asf (vidtoasf) but I don't know how to multiplex them. Windows Media Multiplexer (with graphedit) doesn't work. WMA only supports 48Khz audio at bitrates 128kbit or more.

If I Can Achieve a Perfect Sync (drom the First Second of the Movie to the Last One) When Merging Audio/Video Using Filter Graph Editor, Is There Any Reason for Me to Consider VirtualDub?
When I'm Using VirtualDub I Get a Really Bad and Out of Sync AVI.

Does VirtualDub Suppose to Give a Better AVI?

This is the only way that I found when talking with a very nice person on #pcdvd at IRC! It's difficult, so follow the instructions with caution!

Launch GraphEdit.
From here on, I'll write exactly what do you have to do!
Click on Graph Menu.
Select Insert Filters.
Click on the + to open DirectShow Filters.
Click on File Source (Async).
Select the AVI file.
Click on AVI Splitter.
Click on AVI Mux.
Click on File Writer.
Give a filename to the final AVI ex. output.avi.
Click on AVI/WAV File Source.
Select the WAV file (encoded in MP3).
Close the Insert Filters Windows.
Link between output of File Source (Async) and input of Avi Splitter.
Link between output of AVI Splitter and input of AVI Mux.
Link between output of Avi Mux and input of File Writer.
Link between output of AVI/WAV File Source and the second input in AVI Mux.
Click on the play button.
When finished you get a AVI MPEG4/MP3 File !

The reason for using VirtualDub is that Mp3 Producer and Radium Mp3 codec set wrong bitrate info:
"Finally, the Fraunhofer-IIS codec is very lazy and incorrectly sets the bitrate of the stream. For instance, a 48Kbit stream encoded by the Fraunhofer-IIS codec has a specified rate of 6000 bytes/sec, when in reality the stream is about 5971 bytes/sec. This 0.0048% difference may not seem like much, except that it causes the audio to race past the video approximately one second for every 200 seconds of video. One way to ‘fix’ this problem is to correspondingly adjust the video frame rate to compensate. VirtualDub will automatically correct for this problem when compressing audio to MPEG format."

I also use Graphedit when possible because it's faster.

Use,

1. mpeg2avi for Encoding the AVI. (Write the Number of Frames Reported by mpeg2avi at the End of the Encoding - 129961)

2. ac3dec for demuxing from VOB 2 WAV (Write the Length of the WAV, in Seconds - 5420.063)

3. Audioactive Production Studio v1.5.4 for MP3 Encoding (or Directly Encode the VOB 2 MP3 Using ac3dec and Fraunhofer MP3 codec v1.063 Optimized)

4. AVI Frame Changer to set FPS = 23.977765 (129961 / 5420.063)

5. Filter Graph Editor to Merge the Audio and the Video (Don't Even Check It First with VirtuaDub or any Other Program Because When Entering the FPS (Above) in AVI Frame Changer the Audio and Video are Then Synced)


for a 90 Minutes Movie It Takes Me (On Pentium III 450) About:

55 Minutes to Encode from VOB 2 MP3

6 Hours to Encode from VOB 2 AVI (MPEG-4)

Only 9 Minutes to Merge the Audio and the Video (Using Filter Graph Editor).


And SASO, If You Say that Filter Graph Editor is Faster then VirtualDub Then for Me, Filter Graph Editor is the Better Choice for Merging the Audio and the Video.

If the Last Step (That Takes Only 9 Minutes) Makes a Perfect Synced Audio and Video AVI Then Why Change It? (I Know I Won't).

What is Left to Check:

1. The Best MP3 Encoder.
2. The Best Way to Use the MPEG-4 Codec for Compression.
3. If Encoding to Different FPSs Really Saves Space without a Quality Drop.

MS-MPEG4: key frames / crisp
Does anybody know what *exactly* these 2 settings do and what the recommended settings are? I read in Cheekyboy's DVD to 2ASF FAQ (Great! Please keep it up!) and also
Danni Din's postings that the crisp setting is supposed to be responsible for 'fast movements' but everybody uses completely different settings (20/100)...?? And for the key-frame rate seemingly nothings for sure...

I made some tests myself:

key frame rate: Can't see no difference between 1sec and 5sec. Can see a big quality difference (much worse, but also smaller files) when setting to 1min or so. So what's the recommended setting here?

crisp: Can't see no big difference between 0 and 100! Not in quality and neither with 'fast movements'. Strange. Maybe I need new glasses...??

Also, what is the advantage in converting the final.avi to asf format?? In my tests (mpeg4)avi files were much better seekable (fast forward) than their asf counterparts
(yes, I used the -seekable on parameter). So why would I use asf anyway?

So can somebody please share some knowledge here?

Anyone? I would imagine this is how long between solid frames.
Crispness?
Not much difference on most films although lower seems to blur a little more. But on Spawn R2 the intro and several close up scenes involving fire seem to have loads on blockiness and increasing the crispness to 100 improves this a bit - also the higher the value the larger the AVI seems to be.

Why ASF?
The only thing I have found is that playing an ASF uses less processor time than the original AVI. I'm currently mucking around with MS ASF indexer to improve the seekability of the end ASF.

Anyone got a good tool for joining these MPEG4/AVI's / ASF's (already multiplexed with sound in mp3)?

I'm Not Sure, But I Think that When the Key Frame Value is Set to a Lower Number,When Playing the Final.AVI You Can Play with the Windows Size Maximize, Minimize, Full Screen ,Fast Forward... without Making Any Unwanted After Effects or Making the Audio/Video Out of Sync.
When Setting to Keyframe Every 1 Second I Can Do Whatever I Want to the Media Player's Window and When Setting to Keyframe Every 8 It Get Stacked and Such...

That Was the Only Difference I Could Encounter.

Any MPEG compression stores only differences between frames. The whole picture is only stored in keyframes. If for ex. a keyframe is every 1 min and you want to seek to 58 sec, player has to decode every frame from 0 sec to 58 sec to display the picture. If keyframe is every second it only has to decode that one sec. More keyframes larger file, better quality, faster response time (fullscreen, maximize...this doesn't happen if you pause the player before switching to fullscreen) -> less keyframes smaller file, lower quality, slower response time.
The reason why to use .asf? M$ dropped out support for MPEG4 avi in their codec. Only beta version supports it. When you convert to .asf you can use the newest codecs (less processor used, better picture). I use beta version (3688) of MPG4C32.dll for encoding and playing .avi and new version of mpg4ds32.ax (3846) for playing .asf.

The Key Frame tells the codec every how many frames he build a complete frame and not only a differences from the last frame coded.
In Mpeg after a Key frame the codec only saves the graphic differences from the next and the last frame (few bytes to store).
When you make a forward on backwards jump the player needs to start in a Key Frame to show whole picture because the key frame picture is the only one with all of the frame's information, the frames between two key frames only have incomplete information, you need to start decoding in a key frame.
More Key frames: better picture quality, bigger file, more processing power, more seek able film.
Few Keys frames: worse picture, little file, few processing power, few seek able film.
You need to use ASF format if you want that your films play with any version of the mpeg4 codec from M$. If you leave your film in AVI format you need to have installed the beta codecs from M$ that you use to compress the film.

I think that in the future the new mpeg4 codecs can be better (at play) and you can take advantage of this.

Here's another simple way to do it, although it's a bit stupid.
A friend of mine who has absolutly no knowledge on A/V converts the dvd to mpg using DVD2MPG (surprise, surprise) with an mpeg bitrate of 4000kbit/s and then he uses StreamAnywhere to convert the mpeg to asf.
stupid? yes?
simple? yes?
bad quality? not really!!

anyway, I wouldn't do it that way...

And before any of you newbies start to use this method, take a look at the dates, yes, it was in the last century. So, only use this method if you want to "taste" some backups that have "FULL DVD resolution/quality in a 650meg file ready for burning to one CDR.". Hihi...
