Im newbie on Sony Vegas (8.0)

the question is if the preview window shall work as it does for me? which i simply that it dont play any image, just plays the sound from video-objects on the timline..when using the only "play-bar" that exist in the interface (at the bottom)
don't matter what videos i try

i have consulted various tutorials, but atleast i didnt find why it is like this, but im pretty un-attentive on the ohter hand :p

but should it play audio and video from the same "media player bar? :helpful:

1) Have you checked the dropdown "Help" menu?
2) Have you read the documentation?
3) Have you checked at the program's website?

i dont see any names called droppdown meny no, im not kidding..i thou have read a fasst-guide, with yellow droppdown windows, is that what you meaned?

Me:You:So, you want other people to do your research for you?

If i dont get throu myself, then i try anything yes..otherwise i will miss half life generaly since i am as i am, this is the meaning with net-forums, but you could hardley call it research in this case, i have writen exactley what i want answer on, and a "real" Vegas user probalby identify this solution directley..atleast in my imagination? but i can be wrong offcorse, but if you would have replyed that you dont know whats causing it, then i could in turn know what legg i shall stand on by now :stupid:

but now i catch it like you wanna force forward that my structure capability in combi with english-language comprehension must improve, cause the lowest-high level is far reached lol, even thou im unique :) ore you have experience of ignorant none-manual reader peoples on this forum..and i was them now?
you know the solution nethertheless? and that solution is probably just 4 sentences you could fasst write down half asleap and klick submit replie and move on with life instead of this? :p ;)

LOL I see the help menu at the top offcorse, i thauth you looked for something else :stupid:
i atleat dont find any solution in thoose help droppdowns..i think this below is moore close thou

What video format (codec) are your clips?

i have tested clips among all the *most common* formats and codecs
managed to get some life in the preview now after possibly changing preview setting to "full" instead of "auto" or see *1* some files now play picture

below is my codec research which play picture and which do not

Working:
DivX (4.5.6)

Pending:
Xvid MPEG4 codec
(some works, some generate this red thin offline line on video slot)
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/4371/namnls22ln3.th.jpg (http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=namnls22ln3.jpg)

Not Working:
DivX 3 (low motion)
WMV (Not supported it says!!!!!!!?)
ASF (none supported again, to bad, when my primary edit file is ASF)

something must be not installed here?
I have no plugins or the Media Manager installed, cause i dont see how i should have installed thoose components? aren't thei included?, plugin may not be related to supporting file formats thou? i dont know
I have reinstalled Vegas 2 times, that is all i manage lol

I have K-lite Coded pack installed as i allways have
and i hade divx bundle at the same time, possibly when i wrote this topic, *1* today i uninstalled divx 5, perhaps that was the factor that maked some previews to start play..i dont have any profs if it was that or the change in Vegas preview settings

Codec packs (especially K-lite) are notorious for messing up video codecs on a system-wide basis. I would uninstall any packs you have and then reinstall only the codecs you need. The presence of codec packs makes it nigh on impossible for people to help troubleshoot the problem.

I have the trialware, but i have taken for granted that even thou it must be allowed to preview files with the trial, so that is why i took the question here

If some of you are right above..i didnt know that its your own installed codecs thats gonna do the work, i imagined that the nessesary codecs where implemented in Vegas, therefore i didnt think of K-lite
im gonna uninstall K-lite pack and test again now, but i guess i must have some other codec installed to cover that up,

FFdshow?, Xvid? or Divx? perhaps multiple?

All you need is ffdshow. It will decode almost everything you need - all the old DivX stuff, Xvid, etc...

If Vegas and ASF are unsupported by Vegas, that's Vegas's problem. Maybe you can remux these to something like AVI..

Don't blame a codec pack without any proof of its wrongdoing. And even then you should blame the particular codec or filter that causes a problem.

If I am correctly informed, fact is that Sony Vegas simply does not use DirectShow. It only supports formats for which it has plugins and it might also have some support for VFW codecs (I am not sure if that still applies to the latest version). So try installing the appropriate VFW codecs.

I have installed Vegas 7 instead of 8, and some problems are gone therefore, because media manager and plugin definentley works now
all formats are previewing exept still any kinds of AVI and ASF
its serious that AVI refuse

now i have only latest FFDshow installed, but that have not helped

Isn't FFDshow containing the VFW codec just by having it installed? and K-lite allso does it after what i have read
otherwise i dont understand what a VFW codec is?
if there are different ones, how do i know which one is appropriate here? Vegas draws all kinds of avi over same edge

seems like its the same system in both Vegas 7 and 8 anyhow

Yes it contains the VFW codec, but they're not enabled by default :)

FFDShow supports both DirectShow decoding and VFW decoding. Since it's primarily targeted at media playback, popular DirectShow decoders are enabled by default. However, if you need VFW support (for VirualDub, or in your case Vegas) go into the VFW configuration for ffdhow, and enable the appropriate decoder, and pray that Sony likes it :)

Thanks alot, that was the solution

rumours said that H.264/AVC must be sett to libvacodec to play avi, uninstalling xvid and divx and then install latest ffdshow version whas enough, cause H.264/AVC was allready enabled as deafult

everything works now exept asf
either there is some other know VFW that fits asf? or i must try to convert asf to avi i guess
