I just got a new rw disk from pioneer. It wasn't what the old ones were. It says DVD-RW with CPRM. This copyright protection for removable media. Is this going to cause a problem? Should I return it?

Just talked with my cdw vendor. Apparently they are discontinuing all the old rw disks, and replacing them with the cprm version. Did some research on cprm, and sounds like we're going to have a big hurdle to jump over in the future. They are thinking that CPRM will eliminate all pirated software/media. Anyone know more on this?

I was wondering when this would be put into place. I had read about it some months ago I believe. This sounds similar to the CSS protection scheme.
Are they still going to make non CPRM DVD-R discs? I really don't see how this is going to be accomplished through the media itself. May not be nothing to worry about.
Here is a link to more information about CPRM:

I can almost guarentee you that there will be someone who doesn't comply to this standard and once everyone else sees how they are losing money they will drop it. Basicly if you see that something supports CPRM then boycott them they will get the point fast.

Pioneer does support this. They are definitely discontinuing all non-cprm rw's. Oh how they all try so hard, dumping all that money into trying to protect code, and then 1 disgruntled employee just gives it away.

well.. what I'd like to know is if this "feature" has any effect for you now? I don't think it can.. does the drive even support cprm? the files you're going to burn on the disc certainly don't

I don't think this has any effect for now... But let's say we all don't care for now, all this cprm 'media' infiltrating our pc's, and one day, we will have another pc (we will) with other software or OS, which will support cprm... and we won't throw away our old media i suppose (hd, dvd-rw, ...).
Just a tought...

I think everyone should just refuse to purchase these types of disc. Money talks. If you see CPRM on the label, put it back on the shelf and grab another brand. If enough people do it this will go away on its own (remember the genius DIVX DVD idea?]).

the reason why you see the DMCA and all these new copy protection schemes are the effects of the DIVX failure. Their "crack-proof" way of ripping us off has failed, now they're trying it with different technologies and laws that bar you from copying.
and seeing it from this angle returning the disc indeed makes sense. I wouldn't buy a CPRM enabled harddisk ever, same goes for CD-Rs or my zip discs
though here's yet another thought: some of us eventually will have to get such disc to try and mess with them to find out what can be done and what can't. For instance.. I specifically rented certain DVDs because problems were reported (and I was successfully able to solve them)... and I also own a couple of DVDs wich I wouldn't really have bought if they didn't make very interesting test cases for various programs. and if the members of more and dod didn't have dvd discs they'd probably never have released decss and dod speed ripper

I bought the same dvd-rw's from pioneer and i have problems with re-burning data on them:(
I have read in the FAQ on the australian pioneer website that for the use of DVD-RW with my new A04 that i had to do the following:
"How should I prepare my DVD-RW disc before I can use it.?
You will need to format any new DVD-RW (or CD-RW) disc by selecting the option "Erase Rewritable Disc, Full" within the DVD Writing software you would have received with your DVR Writer. For a DVD-RW this can take up to one hour. Following this you can then use the "Quick" Erase option each time you need to clear the disc of files. This only takes a few minutes."
Now I have followed these instructions however every time i want to burn a file on the DVD-RW it says "insert disk"....i have tried several methods:
1: Without formating for the first time i burned data on the dvd-rw with vob instant (session at once)...and then tried to erase/format and use the DVD-RW again...it erased the data but i had the same problem like above, when i tried to burn something again it said "insert disk" ...i formatted it and again the same problem...
2: I formatted the dvd-rw first by using full format that comes with the vob instant software ..and then tried to burn data on the dvd-rw ..again..the same problem as stated above occurred ..what am i doing wrong..?
IS THIS BECAUSE OF CPRM???????
Could you please let me know what teh best way is to use dvd-rw media on the a04 ..so that i can keep on using the dvd-rw's ..i have gone through 4 dvd-rw till now ..none work again...(while it says that 4.7 gig is still available on the media)!!!
i have used these discs and they are no different from standard discs in the ao3 ao4 drives. the cprm only comes into effect when using a standalone recorder to record copyprotected tv signals. the cprm has no effect on writing dvds.
