This is a legitimate derived work under GPL. I have deleted all OT posts regarding that. Please stay on topic, which for this thread is feedback on the player.

Request: A simple archived version. I don't really need an installer for this.

Not much work needed - just drop it completely and make it look like a regular Windows app...

I think it's a VLC fork.
I don't like VLC, so I'll never try this one. :/

VLC developers fail to understand most fundamental things like using a progress bar instead of a track bar (slider) for volume, VLC has has countless issues.

Hah. That's one of the main things I hate about VLC. Who ever thought that was a good idea? I mean... what is so hard about using a slider?

Do you remember the song of Eagles; "wasted time"
And I could have done so many things, baby,
if I could only stop my mind
from wond'rin' what I left behind
and from worryin' 'bout this wasted time.

Hey come on guys you doing him wrong he doesn't do anything bad he gave VLC another face (and for some user missing usability) this way more average users gonna use it (and who knows maybe hes gonna make a new design for the official VLC sometime) , it's a win win for everyone and look he's distributing the source everything is GPL compliant (not like other Player Developer) :).
DGMurdockIII as he said isn't the Developer of Kantaris (but a user that likes it) sure it would be better if the Developer would speak for himself here, i think he can be proud of his GUI Usability enhancements and sharing those with others that like it.

Kantaris 0.3.8a finally released - http://www.kantaris.org/
Development of this version took much longer time than he originally expected. The reason for this is that he started working on several new features at ones. Not all of these features are in version 0.3.8a because then he would have needed another month before he could do a release. The main new features in 0.3.8a are a multi-language GUI and a video library browser. Kantaris 0.3.8a has support for English, Swedish and Russian and I’m hoping that you will help to translate it to other languages as well. The video library feature is made using DirectX and looks like a 3d wall made up of movie posters (see picture). Lastly, 0.3.8a also of course contains some other smaller improvements and bug-fixes compared to 0.3.7. If you wonder why the version is named 0.3.8a instead of 0.3.8 it’s because he forgot to fix one thing before uploading 0.3.8.

i like it, nice job.
however i saw there's a v0.3.9 on the website. what are the differencies between 0.3.9 and 0.3.8a?
also, just a sidenote on the website, the download section is not up to date. it shows version 0.3.7 as "latest version".

Kantaris 0.4.0 released - http://www.kantaris.org/
This release is mostly a bug fix release so no real new features but a few have been polished a bit. I’ve also made a zip package for those that don’t want to use the installer. The package is completely portable and can be run from an USB memory stick or similar. Also Kantaris has now been translated to several new languages and I would like to thank everyone that has contributed. Thanks to:
* Siarhei Kuchuk for the Russian translation
* Maurício Meneghini Fauth and Henrique Duarte Lima for the Brazilian Portuguese translation
* Martin Basgier for the German translation
* Tony Yu for the Simplified and Traditional Chinese translation
* Joco1114 for the Hungarian translation
* AD Lucans for the Spanish translation
* Muhammad Nour for the Arabic translation

It's a no go for me. This is mainly because it requires .Net framework, and for that I really don't have a use right now.
If it helps, I will give my opinion regarding the interface (this is based on viewing the screenshots)
I really think the player needs a simple interface, not some clone of WMP. The interface must not disturbed the user while using the program, and it should have all the major functions in a handy place. But as I was saying, I didn't really tested the player... so maybe I'm missing something.

I've just tried it and no one else seems to have mentioned the library feature or the fact that it looks up movie covers, description and subtitles online. To me these are huge features which I haven't seen before!

I guess he was asking about the ability to play BDMV folder structure/BD.ISO image file once it was decrypted and stored on HDD.

Tried it shortly for the first time. Overall impression: looks good :)
Things that I liked:
- Overall look and feel, colors, layout, menu at the title-bar, etc.
- The movie trailers 3D catalog
- I liked the Last FM integration
Things that I noted:
- Fonts of the position/file name (bottom left) could be more readable.
- When going to full screen the playlist stays visible. I'd have expected it to disappear along with the rest of the controls/info.
- In full screen, when moving the mouse and the OSD slides out, the movie area decreases sharply (preferably 1: OSD overlays the movie, preferably 2: size decreases gradually together with the OSD slide).
- I would have expected the movie to pause when changing to other modes than playback.
- Drag and drop of a clip onto the player adds it to the playlist. I'd expect it to start playing immediately.
Just few things that I noted after a very short usage (some can probably be set up differently but I just used the default). Overall though, nice job, keep up the good work :)

Author could improve "communication" trough Kantaris Official Page: actually I'm unable to understand which version of VLC and Bass audio library have been used for Kantaris 0.6.6.
I'm using version 0.6.6; splash screen shows it correctly but Windows taskbar says it's Kantaris 0.6.5.

kantaris has been updated a fair amount since this post has been last updated it has gpu accelerated playback of hd video and instead of using last.fm it will use playlist.com. This version still uses imdb to get movie and tv show info but the next verson will default to themoviedb.org for movie info and thetvdb.com for tv show info but if it can find the info there it will fall back to imdb but only as a lost resort.
if you want to know where if get the music info just let me know i'll find out and if you have any suggestion or if you find any bugs fell free to post them here and i'll pass them on to the developer
if there is any question you have to about this player i can try fell free to ask
don't forget to get the latest version of the player at the here http://kantaris.org/

Kantaris development should keep in touch with VLC devlopment. Latest version of Kantaris is dated 24th February 2011, probably based on VLC 1.1.7 of 31th January 2011.
3 days ago VLC team released version 1.1.9.
EDIT - By the way, on Kantaris Project Google Page (http://code.google.com/p/kantaris/) you can find Kantaris 0.7.0 dated 23th March 2011.
