How to resize WideScreen video's to get correct Aspect Ratio for Mpeg2 16:9 ?

I want to encode my HD source which is 1920x1080p to Mpeg2 16:9, how do I resize it properly for Mpeg2 16:9 ?

what about other odd widescreen resolution's that are in compressed files ? is there a calculation ? I know there is fitcd & aviscript.

But is there a manual way to calculate ?

The main thing is that in DVD MPEGs aspect ratio is set independently from pixel resolution which is the same in case of 4:3 and 16:9. These 2 standard display AR values are written to MPEG and DVD ifo's metadata to force AR at playback.


But is there a manual way to calculate ?
Basically, if you have anything that should be displayed with 16:9 proportions, you simply take what you have and resize it to the standard DVD resolution like 720x576, then encode with 16:9 flags (any MPEG encoder allows for this).
In case you originally have something different from both 16:9 and 4:3 you add complementing borders and calculate the corresponding pixel values. For those who don't want to do it manually (it is actually simple without any formulas in mind) FitCD simplifies the things.

You can choose any resolution as long as you choose 16:9 as your aspect ratio.

1920x1080
1536x864
1280x720
1024x576
768x432
512x288

All are numbers are divisible by 16 except 1920x1080 in which 1080 isn't although it's a standard HDTV resolution.

Encode it at 720x512 and set DAR to 16:9. Called anamorphic video.

'Still' after what? Do you mean that after resizing a 16:9 video to 720x480 and encoding it to 16:9 MPEG2 you have problems, or are you exploring some wrong method :) ? Unless you crop it before resizing (e.g. for removing black borders), there's no chance for making mistake.

If you are still having problems, try using ZoomBox (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1111789#post1111789); it will do the resizing for you, once you give it the correct info. Please post a screen shot with your current script and we should be able to help you.

Simply resize it from 1920x1080p to 704x480p, which is also an valid DVD resolution. Remember to flag it as NTSC 16:9 in the encoding options.

Is your source 60p or 30p? Frame rate conversion and interlaced/progressive encoding are also major topics.
