guidance to encode a movie...

Hi,

I'm trying to encode the movie Heat to an avi container with mp3 and ac3 audio, and xvid for the video.

I want to use GordianKnot to configure the avs file and then VirtualDubMod the do a 2-pass encoding. The final size I want is the one of the screenshot. I've read the undersize/oversize thread but if you would be nice enough to give me some advice for this specific one I would be very thankful. Advice meaning the config to use on the avs saving window and the settings for the codec in virtualdub.

Undersize/oversize issues will not be a problem if you use the older build of Xvid (1.1.2) or the last VfW build of x264.

I'm using the latest version of XviD. I've done the first pass using the following settings:

Quantization type: MPEG
Adaptative quantization: yes
B-VOPs: Yes
Max consecutive BVOPs: 2
Quantizer ratio: 1.50
Quantizer offset: 1.00

Weight: 1.00
Begin with keyframe: yes
Chroma optimizer enabled: yes
BVOP sensitivity: 0

Motion search precision: 6 - ultra high
VHQ Mode: 4 - wide search
Use VHQ for bframes too: yes
Use chroma motion: yes
Turbo: yes
Frame drop ratio: 0
Maximum I-frame interval: 250

Quantization values: 1, 31, 1, 31, 1, 31
Trellis quantization: yes

When I open the video.pass file with statsreader, I get the following size: 1175MB

What should I do on the second pass to achieve the best quality and the size want.

By the way, I've told gordianKnot to use Lanczos and haven't done any compressability check.

First, change all quants of 1 to 2. And disable Chroma Optimizer; it's broken.

Then use a bitrate calculator to find the bitrate you need, and use it. In most cases, you will get the file size you want.

Note that you need to run BOTH passes with the new settings.

The latest Xvid doesn't fully support VfW, which is what Gordian Knot uses.
I'm using the latest version of XviD.
Gordian Knot will not always size your videos properly if you use the "latest version" of Xvid.

Yes it does... I'm using it right now... Koepi's 1.2.-127 build, patched with VAQ. As new as it gets without compiling from the source repository. No problems. Same for the 1.1.3 builds, if you mean that.

You said you're using Gordian Knot for at least part of the job. Why not use its bitrate calculator?
