View Full Version : Real Video NGV - Questions
Would NGV decoder be able to decode RV40 ( Real Video 10 ) as well.
While the chance of having NGV as open standard like VC-1 would be nice. I think it would bring much greater good to community if the decoder were make public.
That way we could enjoy NGV / Rv10 on much more wide spread platform. Current Rv10 on OSX is very slow. And we are forced to use Real Player.

Well, I'm not in any way "inside" RealMedia, but I guess:
- Yes, I think it's almost for sure the same decoder will decode these formats.
- I really don't think NGV will be an open standard because:
- That's their intention! In any... legal(?)... ways, you ARE forced to use realplayer to decode RealMedia. The "alternative" codecs aren't official. So, yeah, that's why I highly doubt they will ever be open-standard. This way, if you're encoding to RealVideo, you are (theoretically) forced to use their player. Like Win/Win for them.

Maybe the same decoder binary or library will be able to do that, but then it will most likely contain two separate decoders. I doubt they would share large amounts of code considering that NGV is apparently an entirely new development, not an update to the older codec (Edit: this is also confirmed here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1107978#post1107978)). Therefore making NGV an open standard would not directly cause RV40 to open up as well. However, Real might be generous and release the older specs too. If not, you'll just have to hope that FFmpeg developers get the remaining problems (http://codecs.multimedia.cx/?p=128) sorted out at some point.

Karl Lillevold (a RealNetworks engineer) has said (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1108520#post1108520) that they haven't yet decided if the new codec will be an open standard or not. If it will be open, there will most likely be more than one decoder implementation.

:).
What's the other 1%?The various deblocking changes and such that they made so that it was a "ripoff of H.264" rather than "H.264" :p
