Hi,

I know 640x480 is mod16, but is 640×448 also a 4:3 resolution?

Also, would 592x448 be classified as 4:3?

I'm asking because I'm having a hard time trying to figure out the correct resolution to use for some PS2 games that support 480p with 4:3 and 16:9 modes. I'm wasting days here testing and testing, but I'm not sure what is the correct resolution.

Looking below images, the 4:3 and 16:9 720p upscale images match the 640x480 downsized and 852x480 upsized images.

Now I don't know what to think because if you crop the 720x480 video to the "visible" pixels, it works out to 640x448 (which seems to be the PS2 frame buffer), and that is almost 640x480 and 4:3. However, they don't match the other images.

The 720x480 picture does not have 1:1 pixel AR, so it needs to be resized or flagged as NTSC 4:3 to get the correct AR on a PC display.

NTSC resolution for DVDs at 720x480 is displayed at 640x480, so resize to that for 4:3.

Note that the resizing must be done before cropping then, and you will simply end up with the 640x480 picture in your post here.

If you want to convert an anamorphic DVD to a PAR of 1:1 and you don't want to loose details, you should only upscale!

For example MPlayer will upscale a 16:9 PAL DVD from 720x576 to 1024x576, instead of downsizing it to 720x400 ...

But the images I posted here have had no cropping. :confused:

I didn't say they did. I only said that if you are going to resize the 720x480 picture to 640x480, you must do that before you crop it and that after resizing it will be the same as 640x480 picture in the second post.

That doesn't make a difference.

It's a bit easier if you explain what it is you want to do. All of the pictures you posted here are correct under different circumstances.

That doesn't make a difference.

Well, the 480p images are all from the same capture source. My capture card will only capture 480p as 720x480, so the 640x480 is already downsized from 720x480 and the 720x480 is untouched, last the 852x480 is upsized from 720x480.

There might be a difference, after some Google searching I found some info that the PS2 outputs games as 640x480 and DVDs as 720x480. There was also some info that the PS2 framebuffer is 640x448, which matches the 720x480 after cropping.

I mean, does it matter that the 720x480 is a perfect circle and the 640x480 downsize creates an oval?

What I'm trying to do is to capture the videos and have the correct 4:3 and 16:9 resolution aspect ratios after cropping for the videos to be offered for internet distribution and play back on user PCs.

The PS3 hardware upscaler to 720p 4:3 and 16:9 match the downsized 640x480 and upsized 16:9, but those create ovals and not circles

How does it look on your TV? The HW upscaled images do not show a perfect circle either. To me the problem seems to be caused simply by showing a picture on display with the wrong pixel AR. I can't believe they actually use 1:1 on what is supposed to be an SD NTSC signal.

4:3 looks like the below on my SD TD. But on my HD monitor it is a circle because it displays the PS3 output as 720x480.

Thing is though, my SD TV only uses 480i with composite. For my HD monitor I used 480p over HDMI. But were done with with a PS3, however, not sure if it matters.

If you are really referring to NTSC 4:3, it is not an exact 4:3. Think of 720x480 pixels, all with a rectangular shape of (about) 4320:4739. For NTSC 16:9, you have 720x480 pixels with a shape of 5760:4739. For PC, you have true 1:1 pixels. So, for AVI files with pixel aspect ratio of 1:1 (i.e., you do not specify a custom PAR in the video data), if you don't want any cropping, you can try 656x480 (or 720x580 if you are willing to bother with interlaced resizing).
