View Full Version : Can someone recommend a BD-ROM drive to RIP my BluRay discs?

Just curious what the best BD-ROM drive is and if there are any limitations. I rather not get a Sony BD-ROM drive if possible (hate them and the fact their business practices allowed for enough propaganda for BluRay to prevail - same reason I refuse to buy a PS3 simply for BluRay playback and will be playing ripped movies on my Vista Media Center PC instead).
thanks guys

If you want to know what the best drive is don't ask here (you will need to read review's), as most people here will only be going off review's, they wouldn't have tested the masses of different drives available.
Now I did a bit of research before buying my BR drive and i can highly recommened the LG GGC-H20L, it is a BluRay/HD Combo Drive, reads BR/HD and writes DVDR/CDR i have no complaints about it at all, it has never failed to read an disk and its performance seems very good.

To sum it all up, this is what we would say: “The LG GGC-H20L is a Blu-ray Disc & HD DVD reader giving you the ability to watch high-definition content on your PC, additionally its capability to write DVD and CD-R media with excellent quality establishing this drive as an All-In-One solution.” We therefore award the LG GGC-H20L the CDFreaks’ Safe Buy Award.

How long does it take to rip a full DL BD-ROM? I currently use my PS3 networked to a Windows XP PC to dump an iso, and this takes upto 8 hours! I'm looking to cut this time down if possible.
The ideal entry point for me is when I can buy a 6x drive for about 50-60 GBP (100 - 120 USD).
Cheers, Beastie.

Thanks for the encouragement - I bought exactly that drive after seeing on newegg it was heads above everything else in its user reviews, 2x "customer choice" award winner, etc. I noticed it had the fastest dual-layer BD read speed that I could find in a drive. Also it seemed newer than Pioneer's drive which came out almost a year ago.

30-60 minutes with the GGC drive. The network idea is not a good one. At the very least rip to an external drive. :) Nonetheless, the GGC is an awesome drive. I'd like to pick up its brother, the GGW so I can burn BD's, as well.

It's a great drive. You won't be disappointed.

Depending on the size of the rip, between 20 and 40 mins, i've had it about 3 months and loving it...
8 hours is friggen ridiculas, what your experiencing is the low transfer rate of your network....

30 - 60 mins is much better. Unfortunately I don't have an external drive, but I may soon have a BD-ROM drive :)

My network is all wired gigabit. What is strange is that it often starts out fairly quick, dumping 15GB in 30 mins, and I expect the rip to be complete within 2 hrs. But then when I check later, the speed has dropped right down and it ends up taking 6 - 8 hrs :(
I can feel a purchase coming on.
Cheers, Beastie.

Just do it, it's been an awesome drive, it is my only optical drive right now and it's done nothing wrong at all, sometime in the near future i may drop some money on a BR Burner, when the media drops abit.

Same boat as dat720. Absolutely flawless drive for both BD and HD DVD's. I've had mine since late December and it's performed incredibly well. I'm also toying with the idea of a burner at some point. I'd like to move the GGC to my other machine and drop a GGW in this one. We'll see how that goes. But, Beastie, drop the hammer on that purchase. You won't be disappointed.

For me a BluRay burner purchase is pointless until the blank media gets cheaper than the current cost-per-Gigabyte of harddisk. Who knows if BluRay blanks ever catch harddisks as a storage medium, with 500gb drives to be had for $60 if you know where to look, and obviously continuing to fall (1Tb drives are less than $150 if you know where to look). GOOD TIMES.
