H.264 movie lagging my Q6600??

I have The Golden Compass with H.264 encoded at around 9000Kbps with 1509Kbps DTS as audio in an AVI container (surprisingly, how did that happen?). When I tried watching the movie using MPC, some of the more intense scenes with massive particle movements will seriously lag (only about 15fps)my Q6600!!! Is that normal? No hardware acceleration was used from my 8800GT. The normal scenes take about 15-20% of my CPU. Is there a way to get the decoder to use all my cores (or just two) since a single core from my Q6600 isn't enough to decode this. Is it normal? Can you use hardware acceleration with MPC? Is it better than software decoding.
