Need opinions on software which gives excellent results for DVD>x264 conversion

Hey guys,

I'm looking to backup my DVD collection for the second time. When I first did it I used GordianKnot and XviD using AVI as the container with mp3 audio (because it is a widely supported format), but I want to re-do them @ higher quality.

I have done a few test encodes using x264 and am impressed at the quality:filesize ratio compared to other codecs.

I have successfully done DVD>x264 backups using AVI for the container using GodrianKnot v0.35 but EVERY time I check the final product it is always out-of-sync but like a few nano seconds - enough to notice so that it's annoying. For me this is unacceptable.

After many, MANY hours changing encoder and codec settiings and trying different movies I still get the same problem.

So I'm thinking perhaps its a problem between x264 and AVI container - I heard that AVI isn't the best for x264... is this ture?

So I'm looking to try .mp4 container (seems to be the next most widely supported container) with mp3 audio (because it is so widely supported)

So what is the best software to create DVD>x264 backups using the MP4 container. A few people have recommended meGUI - what does this board this of this?

I would consider myself to have an average/intermediate knowledge of encoding... so I want something with a GUI that is easy to use but without sacrificing encoder options (i.e. I don't want any of these '1 click' solutions as they produce poor results [from personal testing])

Finally is there a good pictorial guide for using meGUI?

Q6600 @ 3Ghz
2Gb DDR2 800 RAM
GeForce 8600GT
Asus P5B Mobo
WD 500Gb SATA2 HDD
Corsair 620W PSU
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude
Win XP SP3

I want to encode using MAX settings (when realistic - I don't want an encode to take 3 days lol).

My opinion is RipBot264 But MeGUI has advanced advantages as does AutoMKV

You may find the Installers for AutoMKV and RipBot in My signature...

Its ok we all make mistakes. RipBot is the easiest to use So I would Recommend it for someone who is looking to just get the job done...

I like AutoMKV, latest beta the best. Ripbot264 is probably easier to use, but AutoMKV has some features (like supporting --engage keep_bitstream_ar_info) which I find necessary for DVD conversions.

If you were a true Gordian Knot user, not the watered down AutoGK, then you'd like AutoMKV. Perfect blend of higher-end tweaks without too much to learn. It does some great heavy lifting behind the scenes.
