My, oh my, how times have changed!

Back in the 1950s, at the onset of Rock 'n' Roll, the scandal that shook the recording industry and radio disc jockeys was "PAYOLA" - under the table payments made by the record labels to disc jockeys, to assure that particular records would be played, played more frequently, and spoken of highly.

Howard Stern had a lot of fun with this on the air the other day. The blantant hipocracy is amazing, specially when you consider that Sattelite radio has to pay for play (just like internet radio), when old-fashioned terrestrial radio still doesn't. With how bad terrestrial radio is hurting, I think that the RIAA is trying to get blood from a stone.

In a tangentially related matter, the FCC's holding up the sattelite radio merger is pure **** funded by the NAB.

And in case anyone is confused by this and statements made in the Yoko Ono thread, we are talking about 2 different groups of people. Broadcast stations do pay ASCAP and BMI, but these organizations represent the composers, authors, and publishers NOT the artists, producers, or distributors. This is the result of an earlier compromise when it was felt that the record sales were sufficient compensation for the artists and that radio play did promote sales.

I'm a big stern fan and i love when he goes off on his rants about terrestrial radio. What's depressing is how much influence lobbyists have on the american government - theres no legitmate reason SIRIUS and XM shouldnt be allowed to merge. Terrestrial radio is dying a slow death, but its being prolonged by its last grasps to find money anywhere it can. Along with trying to hold up this merger long enough to hurt XM and Sirius to the point where they both go out of business comes the ridiculousness of what their trying to do in the news item referenced by Setarip_Old.

Complete insanity.
