Downgrade to WinXP = encoding speed increase?

In regards to encoding in VirtualDub, Megui, and Nero Recode:

Would I get a substantial speed increase by reverting back to Windows XP? Vista runs slow as it is: copying files takes decades, file deletion is slow, et cetera.

Yes. I know that my computer is slow, but Vista makes it run like a snale. It came with Vista preinstalled, so I don't know how much of a performance increase/decrease I would get if I installed XP in place of Vista.

Yes it does.

Depending on how much RAM you have - XP may be significantly faster. For less than 2GB of RAM, XP all the way. >=2GB of RAM, Visa seems to be okay.

SP1 did increase speed, but Vista's extra crud will still eat RAM, and still slow you down. CPU-wise, I don't think it makes too much of a difference.

XP is usually just few % points faster CPU-wise... assuming you already removed all the crap that starts up on vista and tweaked it a bit.

To my opinion, if your ram < 2GB, XP may be a good choice, but if >=2GB, VISTA/2008 is faster than XP anyway

Nope, >=2GB. My computer have 2GB RAM, I could play FIFA08 and compress a movie at the same time in VISTA&2008 , but in XP
I could only compress a movie and browse the web

Is your name more then a Name... Something seems loose to me unless you have a duel core or higher there is no physical way of doing what you have implied...

Setting Affinity to one on one core and the other on the other core is the only way. Otherwise you would experience massive gittering in game and a very slow encode...

The encoder = 99% of CPU in most cases and the game needs free open CPU resources to process complex code to run the game...

So which is it? you cant have your cake and eat it to...

Please note paged memory is stored on the Hard Drive cutting your read and write time in half as that some system cash is stored in the paged memory temporarily and is accesses quite a bit...

Vista Caches and accesses the disk more often because it has more processes and services running in the background...

So XP though clearly not the resource intensive OS that Vista is; can not possibly be slower then Vista specialty when 2GB or less of ram is used...

Proof is needed before I will believe this as truth...

My CPU is Core Duo T2300. If I do nothing but compress the video, the speed is besides 1.5fps~2fps

It all depends on the speed of the computer. On a new medium computer vista is better, especially one that is fully updated. Vista x64 is even better. On a low end computer or older computer, XP may be faster (especially in a low ram environment). If you turn off what you don't use, the performance of vista can be quite good. Windows 7 is basically an updated Vista (not completely new like people think), modularised for performance, which basically means turning off uneeded things automatically. Windows 7 (actually truely 6.1) is like Windows 98SE compared to Windows 98, which is why it will be released possibly as soon as mid to late next year. A Lamborghini isn't any faster than a Fiat 500 if the traffic is to slow to make use of it. Vista is like the Lamborghini, on a unblocked road (fast computer) its faster than the Fiat (XP), but on a slower, more congested road you can't make use of it.
