View Full Version : PS3 not streaming AVI 6GB (Open-DML) with DTS Audio

Hi everyone,

My PS3 has been working fine for streaming the DVD and Blu-Ray rips perfectly. With new firmware it can now handle AVI files greater than 4 GB which are on Open-DML standard. However this one file has been giving me problem no matter what so ever I do, it always shows as "This data is not supported" on PS3.

Here the whole story,

1. I downloaded a Blu-ray rip of a movie around 7 GB in size. The file container was MKV, Video Codec was H.264 and Audio is DTS 5.1 48Khz.

2. Obviosuly as the PS3 with any DLNA (Tversity and Twonky I have both) will not stream MKV file so I had to convert it to AVI file using XVID4PSP which is working quite great. I used the AVI Hardware HD setting with Extreme Q2.0 profile for minimal quality degradation.

3. The resulting AVI file was around 6.5GB in size with XVID as video codec and the same DTS audio stream as in the original file (since I wanted to hear to DTS).

4. Then i muxed the DIVx format XSUB subtitles with this AVI file using AVIAddXSubs ver 7.3 which resulted with a file with DIVx extension. (Which is no problem as you can just change the file extension to AVI , eitherways it plays in PS3 as I have done with my other files).

5. The file doesnt plays on PS3, no matter what tricks I do with it.

I have other files around 1 ~4 GB in VOB/AVI format which play perfectly on PS3 (these are also converted from big size MKV files). I just cannot figure out what is causing this trouble.

Can anybody help with it. I just was thinking that is PS3 able to play AVI files with Open-DML (required for large AVIs) >6GB and secondly is DTS audio causing some trouble on PS3 ? . Has anyone tested playing a similar media file via streaming.

Thanks in advance for reading and replying.

Well,

I will not say that I have'nt downloaded it. But to try out the High Definition format streaming on PS3 I have no other choice, since HD-DVD is dead now and Blu-Ray is very rare and not available at the place I live in.

Anyways, guess I am not asking anyone to share any content illegally. I have it already with me. So no harm to anyone. Since my query is purely of technical nature regarding the compatibility of hardware and its playable media specification, I believe it does not qualify for being not answered.

I have already seen posts on this forum, where individuals do share or ask their procedures for video conversion in various formats and specifications for streaming to PS3. Thats the whole objective of my question. I am asking about some capabilities which i dont know of, about PS3.

1. Can it play AVI files > 6GB (it should as per the firmware update 2.3 I guess, but its not. I have played files of size 1GB - 4GB on it, this is my first file for this size) ?

2. Can it play AVI files with DTS audio track.? ( I have no file with DTS, this is my first experience)

3. Can it play AVI files with Open-DML specification (since larger AVI files are composed by default with this specification as per my knowledge)

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Regards,
Myself.
