hello,

i use hqdn3d to filter noise and overall the filter is nice. but it seems to be not that stable and it changes the hair of persons in my media. so is there an (stable and mybe better) alternative for avisynth?

@nabilash : what settings did you use for hqdn3d ? on what type of source ? The defaults are very strong and only suitable for anime or noisy sources.
hqdn3d(2,2,2) is pretty conservative on a DVD source, while still killing enough noise imho.

Thanks, just tryed dfttest which is very slow (even with much lower degrain settings than the default ones). Will try the others, too.

I got a bluray as a source and the default ones weren't hard enough so I used hqdn3d(ls=2.5, cs=2.0, lt=3.5, ct=3.0). It's still not as hard as dfttest@default. :D But dfttest is much more slow. :(

Will try the others now...

Defaults are as follows (much stronger than what you mention) : http://akuvian.org/src/avisynth/hqdn3d/hqdn3d.txt ... so god knows where you got your settings from ;)

... but those defaults are typically strong enough to deform textures like hair or grass (though I haven't worked with HD material yet) :) Would you mind posting screenshots of the source and processed clip ? I usually use a hqdn3d and fft3dfilter combo, and that suits most of my needs. It's all down to how picky about the result you are really

Here are screenshots of the different filters:

1. Original (without filter) (http://s8.directupload.net/images/080623/8x24i92m.png)
2. hqdn3d (http://s8.directupload.net/images/080623/wpix7bwf.png)
3. mvdegrain (or denoise, I forgot which one it was, they look pretty much the same) (http://s8.directupload.net/images/080623/3zrkyetp.png)
4. fft3d (http://s8.directupload.net/images/080623/wnh6pgfn.png)

hqdn3d and fft3d have the best speed, I would prefer fft3d but it has a disadvantage: it seems to create "artifacts" by not denoising every area the same way. here's a screenshot (http://s8.directupload.net/images/080623/3yx6sqd8.png) (I made it bigger).

What do u recomend to us for anime. I have tried only hqdn3d with default settings and i like the result. The onlu con is that in high motion and dark areas i get some kind of trails. Shall i try a lower setting?

Yes but mc-spuds is difficult to use DirectShowSource and MT with. So I recommend FFT3DFilter.

I suppose you should start setting the lt=x.xx parameter to something more reasonable :)

FFT3DFilter is not as fast as hqdn3d and it leavea some trails as well. Something else?

What do you mean by "it's difficult to use DirectShowSource with"?

Is overlap the reason why it's difficult to use MT with, like blksize=8, ov=4? If that's the case then doesn't that result in higher quality denoising since there is less chance of artifacts and more detail is kept?

Hardly anything's as fast as hqdn3d, aside from more limited denoisers like FluxSmoothST and DeGrainMedian. You pay for quality with speed. It's up to you to find your speed limits. And yes, if you get trails your settings are too high; lower them until they disappear.

Honestly I'm not yet sure why. I have just started to begin experimenting with mc_spuds in the past several days and I have encountered issues. There are certainly issues with setMTmode, DirectShowSource and Haali media splitter; and setMTmode is the most discussed method of using MT in the mc_supds thread. I guess most of the people posting in the thread are using DGDecode. Most BD files need to be processed with DirectShowSource though.

What is the best filter used for anime? I don/t care about speed.

Who knows? What are you trying to achieve? Different filters have different behaviors and depend greatly on your taste - some love warpsharp, some hate it, some love smartsmoothHQ, some won't settle for less than mc_spuds. This is why rule 12 exists.

@ egrimisu,

You are probably receiving "trails" as you call them because you are over filtering. Post your settings and let's take a look at what you are trying to achieve.

there are many good filters and it depends on the source you are working with.

Personally I use fft3dfilter, though it is slow but I like the results of it. The rich settings gives it capability to be used on various source - varying from low noise to high noise sources. You can use inbuilt sharpness capability too, where results are similar to what warsharp provides.

MVDegrain1/MVDegrain2 are also interesting filters to look into. If you like the results I will highly recommend to try out mc_spuds. Provides pretty good results though processing speed of mc_spuds is also slow for the amount of processing it is doing.
