At the moment I can convert VOBs to MP4 (H264) by using StaxRip so all is well in the world there.

However I have some Xvids that I would also like to convert to MP4 (H264) because I like the quality and size of this format. And one day when I get enough pennies I'm going to get an MP4 player to watch movies on the move :helpful:

Cheers

Can't you open XviD source files with StaxRip (latest beta) just like you can open VOB files? Recently I made improvements in this area, MP4 demuxing added, MKV demuxing improved, reading aspect ratio with MediaInfo dll in case of anamorphic MPEG-4 sources. There might be issues left, somebody just have to report them. :)

If I knew what I was asking and if I knew what I was looking for then I would.

How about either ignoring my enquiry if you are just going to post FTFM or you could offer me a little more constructive help?

To be truthful I find it very infuriating when I get such replies.

And if you feel the same about novice enquiries asking the same questions such as mine then why don't you pass my post by instead of offering such patronising smilies?

How do you think these guys feel when they get asked to answer the same questions over and over????

You question's could easily be answer with a google search something along these lines DVD to AVI guide (http://www.google.com.au/search?q=dvd+to+avi+guide), i even made it easy for you just click the link.....

Unless your xvid files are of a very good quality, you won't gain a better quality just re-encoding them into 'MP4 (H264) files'.
The better the input, the better the output.

Maybe he is refering to keeping the same quality but reducing the size of a divx movie, but in saying that you cannot improve picture quality by using a different codec, you simply cannot restore detail that is missing....

Morning

I had the idea of converting AVI to H264 in the hope that it would save me some space. At the time I started this thread I had wiped my hard drive clean with a fresh install so at the time I did not have StaxRip installed to experiment to see if it would convert. And to be truthful I never even realised that it would do that. This only goes to show my inexperience in this subject when I thought that StaxRip only did VOB to MP4.

Last night I had a go with a 701Mb AVI file and managed to convert it to a H264 file at 530Mb which meant that I was only saving 163Mb of space.

So I'm now wondering is it really worth all that fuss just to shave off a few megabytes when my Hard drive is so huge?

I have to admit that looking quickly at both formats of movie I didn't really notice any loss in quality moving from one format to another however if I looked closely I'm sure that there would be differences. So unless I see a real need to convert to H264, which there isn't at the moment, I don't think I will go down that road.

Thank you everybody for helping me with this little pet project.

Cheers

With the really low prices of new hard drives you have to consider the investment of time vs money. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

If you look closey and maybe even take screen cap's from both then compare, the divx is going to look better than the 264, no 2 way's about it.
There is not much point re encoding video's to drop the size, better to just encode new rips to 264.
500gb drives are like au$130 if you look around these day's, i'm picking up a 'mates rate' 1tb drive on thursday for au$165
Storage is sooo cheap it is not worth worrying about a hundred or 2 MB

Let me defend my fellow newbie, lemming.....
As I understand it, this is the NEWBIE FORUM,,,the idea being a common ground for people to assemble and exchange info WITHOUT adding the task of having to google. The problem with googling ourselves is that we don't know where to start....it's like you ask a point of law and a paralegal telling you to go to their law library and look it up yourself. The task of understanding this hodge podge that doesn't even set standards for it's own self is daunting enough for people who aren't so inclined. Thus, the choice here is either help or don't reply. My supposition was that you are HERE to give us a hand.

I posted a simple newbie question also re - mpeg4: divx and avi: divx. It may be rudimentary FOR YOU, but confusing as hell for US.

I understand what you are saying, but now that i read his original post again, he is not even asking a question, he has made 3 statements that do not really need an answer, and even so he could have gotten the answer himself, by testing his ideas, which he has done in post #8????

And then with coments like this This only goes to show my inexperience in this subject when I thought that StaxRip only did VOB to MP4. Again, all it takes is to read the help file, or goto the website of the product to check what it's supported files are, even the open dialog of most programs will give you clue's if not make it blatantly obvious as to what files it supports.....

The majority of question's answered here (and just about every other forum) could be answered by doing a little research.

It maybe confusing as hell but once you start reading a few wiki pages or guide's or just plain documents on the subject what ever it is, it will quickly make sence.

I tell ya, i work in IT Support and it seems people have plain forgotten how to read! or would rather ask than reading themselves!

Hi!Thus, the choice here is either help or don't reply. My supposition was that you are HERE to give us a hand"Help" can have many faces. Although I, more often than not, prefer to provide specific information, whether or not I've provided it to other members previously, not all mebers take this approach because:

As opposed to the somewhat generalist suggestion to perform a "Googlesearch", I would hope that you're aware of the eminently helpful Doom9-specific "Search" function ("bond", one of the Doom9 moderators, posted a "Search smiley" in this thread). Using it will provide you with the ability to seek out post and/or threads specific to Doom9 forum topics...

Don't forget the numerous helpful guide's on the doom9 site itself, not just the forum.

i think the point Dat720 is trying to make is that the vast majority of members of this forum have put in many, many hours of work towards acheiving their goals in the audio/visual world..whatever they may be. It is sometimes frustrating to then see newer members post a question that is so basic it could have been answered by, as Dat said, doing a simple search - either in google or in the great search function on this site.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, the moderators on this site do an amazing job of (among other things) keeping threads on track and (albeit not always as gently as they could) guiding new users on not only helping themselves when possible, but also to push them towards putting some of their own effort in as well. The reason this site is so amazing is that many people work very very hard to make it so. when someone enters the forum and posts questions that clearly shows they put little to no effort into finding the answer for themselves its frustrating for many users on this site.

Exactly... the amount of info out there is just plain astonishing!!! there is pretty much no unanswered questions! of course baring new technologies and things nobody just plain thought of before!

I will admit, last week i posted my very first question on a forum, i have the answer but thing's are being restructued in our work enviroment and i need to find a new way to do it, and alas no matter how hard i try and how many different methods i have tried (going on 10 differnet methods) i cannot get it to work as well as it used to, but that's for another forum, the point is, every question i have ever had was answered by searching a forum relating to the subject or doing research using google (or what ever your prefered search engine is) as it is just plain faster than asking a question!

But it seems this thread is getting way off topic now!!!

Went through previous posts by the Lemming after seeing his post today...wonder how this thread slipped by the mods...(not a knock at the mods, more one at Lemming defending himself for his easily search-able question). Unfortunately, it's VERY obvious now he has not even take a quick glance at the rules :(
