View Full Version : Google Video uses x264, but ...

I downloaded 2 videos from GV.
Avinaptic reports they're encoded with x264 alright, but with :

core 41 svn 380
core 44 svn 440

???

OK, the last video was posted 12sep2007, the first long before that (I forget the date). So I checked with one just posted 15jun08 : it's encoded in ... xvid ??!?

Why was I expecting Google, of all people, to use (almost) latest technology ?

cheers

Why would Google use "the latest technology"? They use an abominably bad baseline-only encoder with absurdly low deblocking strength for Youtube--its so bad that I've seen it encode worse than their original H.263 at times, despite having a higher bitrate.

(shudder)

I haven't yet gotten around to uploading some of my video stuff, so I don't know the procedure. If I encode it, do they re-encode it anyway ?
I mean, if I upload a video on which I spent hours of finetuning with greatest & latest x264 release, they just take it & feed it to their x264_0.41.380 or xvid 1.0.x ???
(shudder)
??

a/vYoutube re-encodes with something; rumor has it its Xvid AVC but I've heard information from some people "in the know" that suggests otherwise. Whatever it is, its awful.

Solution: stop using bad video sites. There are plenty of better ones that use VP6 or H.264 at higher bitrates, and a few even now let users encode things themselves (Nicovideo, for example).

Nicovideo

.jp ??? that's all I've come across (I've just searched).
If you got more suggestions, I'm listening !

a/vGiven the horde of video sites scrambling to get assistance on setting up H.264 encoding, there must be quite a few... you'd probably have to look around though, since I host all my own videos
