how to do a first pass in azid to find the maximum gain?
i know azidlamegui does, but i cant figure out the command line..

as far is i know there is no command line for it however
try runnnig with
-g 30d
when finnishfind the greates overflow and substract from30
then run
-g (30-xx)db
then you should have maximum gain value

... be careful when using 'DRC' setting to anything bigger than 'light DRC', there is a small bug in Azid leading to clipping sometimes.
I recommend to subtract more than the real existing max overflow value to be on the safe side .... like an extra - 1-2 dB for DRC normal ...
