Hi all!

This only happens intermittently, but sometimes when I go to watch a DVD through my PC, I load the disc into the drive, and before it plays my PC freezes. It doesn't happen every time, but it's really annoying because I have to switch the PC off manually and I've heard that isn't a good thing to do. My drive is a Lite-On DVDRW LH-20A1P on Windows XP. Also, when the disc does play, the drive makes very loud noises, the best way I can describe them is loud vibrating and rattling. I've never heard my others do that before, so I'm not sure if it's just the Lite-On, or something sinister.

It's not really a bother, but I just want to be sure that something else isn't going on that's going to stuff up my PC.

Thanks for any advice! :)

A faulty dvd drive can give the impreasion of a frozen computer sometimes, i've seen it happen a few times, it's kinda rare but really anoying, so i'd be looking at either the windows install, or the dvd drive, what software are you using to play the dvd?

I'm using Power DVD to play the DVD's. I've always used that, it's never caused problems before. It probably is the drive itself, I had my PC upgraded last November and the guy put in this Lite-On drive, when I had a really good Sony one in my old PC. Not to worry though, nothing else seems to be wrong with it apart from the noise, so I'll perservere :) Thanks!

@LunaMoon

Hi!

What are the specific DVD Titles and Region numbers that are causing this behavior?

Look at gettign your hands on another dvd drive to test with, if the same behaviour is exhibited from another drive then you need to look elsewhere for the problem.

Hi, setarip_old!

It can happen with any DVD. I'm in Australia, so region 4. It happens with blank discs too.

dat720, I'll try your suggestion too. Thanks!

If you can eject the disk when the PC is frozen and it remains frozen, I'd suspect a software issue, or possibly a hardware issue other than the drive itself. If the disk cannot be ejected at all, or if it can be ejected and the PC recovers from the freeze, it's most likely the drive failing.
