Hi
crf 18, 3 bframes, subme 7, 6 ref, me umh, mixed refs, bime, weightb, partitions all, 8x8dct, merange 32, trellis 1, b-rdo, b-pyramid, direct auto, no fast p skip, no psnr and eqm avc hr matrix.

the source is 704x400. im just curious if this setting is good for hq encodes.

704x400 isn't HD encode...

but with crf 18 you'll get a good quality, the others options only affect the file size (with crf mode)

Not HD but hq, high quality encodes on dvd resolution.
should i decrease the crf to say 16 to increase quality?

forget about the matrix, use AQ (default) + PsyRDO

and how do i enable these? sorry for sounding stupid, but ive been using xvid for a long time.

and im using sar 1:1 aswell.

im lost, i cant seem to find the aq and psyrdo in the cli help.

Together with what ToS_Maverick said (PsyRDO is already activated with subme >= 6 and AQ is on by default), try 8 bframes and trellis 2.
Also, what is hq for you? I doubt you'll notice any difference with crf <= 20 for that resolution, so I say go with crf 20-23 :).

PsyRDO is only default with an PsyRDO patched build ;)

Thanks avenger and maverick, i appreciate your help and quick response. I would have been lost without your help

ive download the x264 883 encoder from x264.nl, where can i find the build you mentioned maverick? And ive read somewhere that you shouldnt enable trellis 2 on a 1 pass crf encode, is that info still correct?, or did it only cause problems in older versions of x264?

x264 build with Psy-RDO patch can be found in this thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1147956#post1147956

Also you can use "experimental" Avidemux with Psy-RDO patch if you like:

Next time: :search:

I did search, but couldnt find what i was looking for.

Im still wondering about trellis 2, which i still cant find on the forum...

Start reading from here, and continue down for some info on matrices and trellis.

Here's the psyRDO thread (referenced above):
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=138293

Here's where the newest of the new patched builds are released:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=130364
Go all the way to the end and work your way backwards to find the latest build. Be forewarned though, these are not builds released to the general public and are considered test versions. With that being said, I've found no anomalies with them. I tend to use the ones from Dragon5152.

Thanks for your help chainring i understand now and thank you lord_mulder for pointing me to the psyrdo x264

Take care: Some things about Trellis have changed with Psy-RDO recently!

Before Trellis (especially Trellis=2) was known to show a tendency to kill fine details (e.g. filmgrain). So Trellis was contrapositive in some cases.
Now Trellis is using the new Psy-RDO metric and it will actually help to preserve details. It's recommended to use Trellis=2 when Psy-RDO is on.

You can also check http://x264.tk/ for more PsyRDO and FGO builds :)

Any confirmation? What about --trellis 2 compared to --trellis 0 with psy RDO?

Well, Trellis will find the optimal encoding for each block with respect to a certain metric. This metric now is Psy-RDO.
So I think in order to take full advantage of Psy-RDO, you'll have to use Trellis=2 ...

Which is better - FGO or PSYRDO?

And is it necessary to use a merange of 32 on dvd resolution or is it overkill?

Then I did not understand your previous comment about Trellis and Psy-RDO correctly:

Regarding trellis; I was led to believe that trellis=2 was generally a bad thing. Has that changed now because of the way psy rdo interacts with it, or is it still advisable to avoid it if possible?Trellis 2 is not a bad thing at all with psy RD; the problem before was that it encouraged blurring because RD would often prefer blurrier modes, and trellis would generate blurrier modes. But now, RD prefers *less* blurry modes.

I thing it's overkill ...

Vindarath

which merange should is use? should i use trellis 1 or 2 in crf mode? and is psyrdo better than fgo?

AFAIK Trellis=2 is "good" with Psy-RDO. It performs better than Trellis=1 and without the "bad" effects it used to have before Psy-RDO.
Also I think Psy-RDO is a more general approach than FGO. It improves the quality of almost any source, at least it won't hurt the quality.
FGO is for grainy sources only. So Psy-RDO should remove the need for FGO and Psy-RDO might make it into git some day...

Thanks lord mulder.

Regarding the merange, underground said 32 is overkill. should i leave it at 16 then or should i rather use 24 than 32 on dvds, or is 24 still overkill?

AFAIK merange > 16 is only helpful with "high motion" content and with HD sources, since objects tend to move farther (pixel-wise) in HD sources...

FGO tends to do a lot better with lots of bitrate and a grainy source. If you don't have much bitrate, or the video isn't very grainy, go with PsyRDO.
