I just wondering how to make some really hard movies more compressable. I mean the ones where codec goes up to its limit almost for quite a few minutes. I've made lots of rips using Nandub and experimented with many vdub filters but now I'm stuck.
To be more specific: the source is some porn movie, the compressability check without any improvements stays over 0.920 (in GKnot tab) the, you must admit, is really too much. After resizing with bilinear filter, making clip smoother with spatial smoother + temporal smoother (avisynth script), the number goes down to...0.830.In other words it doeasn't help. I can't use more smoothing becaues I don't want to blurry the clip too much so here's the question: is there any possiblilty to squeeze the movie by manipulating such values as: brightness, contrast, saturation, hue, luminance etc during encoding?
Or maybe any magic vdub filter will help me?
The funny thing is that if I resize movie ( using the same settings & filters )
from 576x432 to 512x384 the compressability check is worse.
I know I'm a bit chaotic but please forgive me.

If you get after compressibilty check value over 75% you should go higher with the resolution. Not lower - HIGHER!. It's in guides.
take care

ops, i must've skipped this part...
however, even if I change resolution to higher one, th eproblem will also occour. I am talking about really hard-to-compress material. Any ideas?

they're moving really faaast ;)
However, this movie is 4 times worse to compress than any other movie in the world...

try compressing the "Trigger Happy TV" dvd (a guy who goes around to stupid things ;)) its filmed mainly on a small hand held camera so lots of camera "wobble" and quite a bit of picture noise to. The beginning and and credits also feature loads of different layers of text passing each other, really nasty to compress :)

the dvd is only 89mins, but it kept oversizing and looking pretty crap, (i tried lots of different res's ect) i had to do it 2cds in the end. (its 4:3 to)

definatly the hardest thing ive seen to compress :)

Hi,

However, this movie is 4 times worse to compress than any other movie in the world...

lol, tell me about it - ive encoded my fair share of pr0n lately as a matter of fact ( most recent private-riviera 2 - its a good one ;) ), it's certainly *the* least compressible "type" of movie in most cases because of bright lighting, ( usually ) constant handheld cam shooting and usually a lot of movement ( hehe, obviously ) .....

I deal with these movies by:

1-encoding audio at very low quality - lets face it, the soundtracks to these movies aren't exactly something great and moans and groans only require so many bits to model them correctly......and visual quality is so much more important in this kind of film. This lame commandline really cuts down on filesize ( at the expense of quality ) -> -m j --abr 96 -h --nsysptune --athtype 2 --lowpass 13.5 --ns-bass -3 --scale 0.85 --resample 48

2-applying a noise filter at low settings - im not really a big fan of filters ( in non-anime films ) tho, and anything heavy produced very fake looking skin tone - you could clearly see areas of light and dark instaed of a smooth graduation of skin tones.

3-Consider upping the number of cds for a decent resolution - 3cds for a 2.5 hr movie sometimes isnt enough for acceptable res ( 512 looks pretty shite to me, ill never use anything below that - but thats a personal thing )

4-use bilinear resizing ( tho it blurs the crap out of edges ).

Any other suggestions are very welcome :)

does enforcing higher DRF's help?

Hi,

I'm a lazy Gknot encoder so i could'nt tell you - although now that makes me think i might jump back to nandub and play around for a bit :).

the compressability check without any improvements stays over 0.920 (in GKnot tab) the, you must admit, is really too much

That's bits/pixel*frames right ? I pretty much threw a lot of the "rules" ( eg. 0.27 for bits/pixel*frames ) out the window - pr0n aint normal in terms of compression ... for most of these movies i been ending up with way over 0.5 after i set the correct resolution ( in the range 80-90% ) using the compression check.

I went back and re-watched some of my pr0n dvds ( riviera 2, indiana mack and b*tches 2 - all private ) and i noticed something - the dvd picture is very, very bad. It's unnoticeable on my TV but on my monitor there is seriously bad noise, edge enhancement has really screwed the picture and there is noticable macroblocks on walls and other objects - yes, its the dvd ( software decoding tho... ). So i think a noise filter is appropriate even disregarding any compression gained by using one..... tho as i said, filters ( at least any that i try ) at anything more than a light setting really mess up skin tones ... btw - anyone know a noise reduction filter that possibly leaves skin looking ok ??

Something else too - on all bar one of my private dvds smartripper hasn't worked properly - the ripped vobs caused nandub to crash on 99% second pass ( doh! ) ... use vStrip to avoid this problem .... in fact, i think you should use vStrip all the time but in this case it's essential. Does anybody know why smartripper cannot handle these DVDs ? I'm guessing poor mastering - but thats a guess!

Cheers ;)

as i said in another t. the spatial soften of avisynth, albeit gives a better look to movies, isnt able to bring down size, since it smooths and sharpen at the same time.
then must find another way to smooth
you could try also to smooth heavyly and then use unsharp mask(just for the center of the screen) to bring up sharpness again
usually this gives lower size
or sharp with levels filter 10-245

imo the better smooth "filter" is using the bilinear resize two times
1st bring up the size to twice the final res
then reduce to the final res
es: xxx-xxx--->1052-864--->576-432

or try to use the "heavy" 3x3 average, and then sharp the movie a little

to reduce size you could also try to decimate frames by 2(select even/odd in avisynth)
