Video Blanking Lines

I've got a question, for a 1080i video source that may be captured off the air, are there any blanking lines that buffer the actual video? If so, are those lines included in the 1080i signal or added on top of the pixel count?

It's digital. Blanking is an analog TV scanning issue.

There may be black bars, but that is a different matter.

It's not what you mean, but the MPEG data will have 1088 line to make it MOD 16. Some decoders incorrectly output those extra lines.

The 1080i analogue signal has 1125 lines. The 720p analogue signal has 750 lines. As neuron2 said, this is irrelevant in digital, and most HD signals have never been through an analogue stage since the original capture to digital (from camera or film).
