I have an avi file without an index. How do I construct an index permanently?

This should do the job:
MEncoder.exe -oac copy -ovc copy -idx -o "C:\Output.avi" "C:\Input.avi"
MPlayer-rtm-svn-26924.7z (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/mplayer-win32/MPlayer-rtm-svn-26924.7z?)

Hi!
I believe you can accomplish this by simply loading the file into VirtualDub, which should automatically ask you if you want to re-index the file.
If not, you should be able to use VirtualDub as follows as follows:
1) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Open Video file" and put a checkmark next to "Popup extended open options"
2) Select the problematic .AVI and click on "Open"
3) Put a checkmark next to "Re-derive keyframe flags"
4) Click on "OK"

To make it permanent, you actually have to save a new copy somewhere.
