Converting 25 fps PAL avi file to 25 fps PAL mpeg2 1:24 pulldown

Dear all,
I have a 25 fps avi file (progressive) in PAL resolution and it is a musical.
I would like to convert it to a PAL mpeg2 file to be able to see it on dvd but I want to restore the sound to the original 24 fps.

I know I could just convert it to an NTSC file but that would sacrifice the resolution of the film.

I have read a lot about 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 pulldown and I have read that DGPulldown is supposed to support this.

How do I go about it?

My initial thoughts are these:

1) Extract the AC3 sound from the .AVI file
2) Convert the AC3 sound from 25 fps to 24 fps using BeSweet
3) Encode the avi to 25 fps PAL mpeg2 using TMPGEnc
4) Mux the mpeg2 file and the new AC3 file
5) Let DGPulldown flag the PAL 2:2 pulldown to 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 pulldown (but how do I do that)

What are your thoughts?

You can slow down the video and audio to 24 fps. Then encode as 24 fps and use DGPulldown to apply 24->25 pulldown.

Why? He can just encode for 24fps and PAL resolution and then apply DGPulldown for 24->25fps. That will slow the video.

You mean I can use TMPGEnc to do the mpeg2 conversion in pal resolution but at 24 fps? I cannot see it offers that option.

Thank you for your input. I encoded as a normal 25fps MPEG2 PAL stream as you suggested and then chose 'Custom' in dgpulldown with the inputs 24 => 25 fps. The output file is in the correct speed now. It will be interesting to see if my DVD player will accept this.

... but what if I also want to slow down the subtitles from 25 fps to 24 fps? Does anyone have an idea?

Depends on your subtitle format. If SUP, I convert to IDX/SUB (SubtitleCreator), convert the VobSubs from 25 to 24fps (VobSub Cutter included in the VobSub package) and then back to SUP (SubtitleCreator). If in some text based format, you can slow SRTs using SubtitleCreator, SSA subs using SubStation Alpha. Among other ways.
