AVI Chunk Viewer problem

Here's the problem:

With a 700mb Xvid file I have, I get the "AVI Chunk Viewer" box whenever I open it or even when I just highlight the icon. The following message appears in the box.

"This AVI was not prepared for sequential reading, the alternative 'AVI Splitter' will now let the default one handle it. The complete reinterleaving of this file is strongly recommended before burning it onto a slow media like cd-rom."

This does not happen with other files, not even other Xvid files so it's probably not a problem with the whole codec, just this specific file.

I have read other threads that tell me to open it in Vdub and turn video and audio to Direct Stream copy and then save, but before I even do that I get a warning that says: "AVI: Palette changes detected. These are not currently supported--color palette errors may appear in the output." I ignored the warning and went on the with fix but it when processing I get this message: "Audio samples 13737-13777 could not be read in the source. The file may be corrupted", and then I am forced to abort.

The thing is that this file has been working fine for me until recently. So I think it may have to do with my upgrade of the K-Lite codec pack. I also recently installed AutoGK and AviSynth. I don't have VdubMod though.

So what should I do?

It's indeed the K-Lite codec pack. It apparently installed the bundled AVI-Splitter which is causing this. My suggestion would be to uninstall the codec pack completely, and just install the codecs you need individually, or just install ffdshow-tryouts. Or, for some reason if you want to retain the K-Lite codec pack, use their bundled Codec Tweak Tool and disable AVI-Splitter.

It is Gabest's AVI splitter that shows this message. The message only shows up for non-interleaved or incomplete files, not for proper files. There is a checkbox in the dialog to hide the message in the future. Then it won't bother you again.

The reason why the filter becomes active is because of the Windows Explorer shell extension that generates thumbnails. If you don't care about thumbnails then I advice to disable that extension because it slows down Explorer and is generally annoying. This command disables it:
regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

However, not only did that warning suddenly start showing up, but the video is no longer seekable and the timer says the video is 499 hours and 29 minutes long! So is this still just a AVI splitter problem or did something corrupt the file?

Is there a particular reason you created and saved the file in AVI v.1.0 format instead of Open DML AVI v.2.0?

If the mystery can't be resolved, simply make another .AVI from your DVD...

Since GSpot detects 98% of your file to be overhead, something is really broken. Does the file actually play normally (not counting the seeking)?

Last thing you could try is remuxing with AVIMux GUI.
