Now that the HD vs. BR issue is settled I will be buying all my future DVDs in BR format. in order to make back ups of my new movies, where can I obtain BR blank discs?

Depends on which country you are from. In the U.S., you can get it from BestBuy, OfficeMax, OfficeDepot etc. But that said, I find them too expensive right now (~$21.99 a pop). I'd advise you to wait till the prices come down a bit.

Or you could use an archive utility (such as WinRAR) to split the disc into several files that can be burned onto recordable DVDs. It's a bit more inconvenient, but a lot cheaper.

Well said. Though the discs are available if you've got the cash... Browse around online

And you would pop in one disk, play the first part rar file using this (http://ds6.ovh.org/drp.html), then pop in the next disk with the second rar and so on? Quite user-unfriendly way, if there is one. And why must he encapsulate the movie in an archive to complicate things? If he must split, the split files must remain in the movie file format (AVI, VOB, whatever).
