HD videos at 50fps on old cpu

France 2, a french TV broadcaster gives two HD videos at 25fps and 50fps:

For those who are not familiar with french, you need to install a codec (http://medias2.francetv.fr/videosread/francetv/hd_rgarros/2008/Mobiclip_Video_Codec_2.2.15.msi) to play the videos.

Should be great to have entire movies to watch in this quality :)

Mobiclip is based on a proprietary patented algorithm.

codec is decoder only (but it's free, so what do you expect, they'll charge for the encoder), but the sample videos don't play any smoother than h.264 on my system. Actually, they play a little slower, only make use of 1 cpu and take up more memory than the h.264 copies I made.

Then again, it's my work system, so it's not exactly a powerhouse, but according to their specs it should play, I've got a P4 @2.8GHz w/ HT and 3GB of ram. Video is the real weakpoint being an Intel 82865G (onboard) 64MB. Like I said, the system is for software development, not HD video watching, but it still should do better than 3-4 fps.

It's strange. Under Windows XP on my althon XP 2200+, the 25fps videos (2008/2008-06-02_*_A.avi) are playing smoothly and I have a 24" screen.
I tried to play the elephant dream video on this same computer and get only few fps.

And for testing I tried with VirtualDub under wine on my gentoo and get 14fps with my 1.8Ghz centrino.
