Strange Issue with AVCHD Playback (Please Help!) *PICS*

I've just converted an MKV file to AVCHD via TSMuxer but when the movie is played on the PS3 the resolution automatically changes to 480p and there is a large, thick green horizontal bar taking up a 3rd of the screen at the bottom.

I did convert the audio from DTS to AC3 and lower the bitrate of the audio however, but that couldn't be the problem surely???

Any advice is much appreciated.

I have the same problem. What the others answers me make sence.. The image do not respect the format. like 1080p, 720p. Your height is not right. In the XMB, the borders are added to the screen, but not in the player. So you need to add the border yourself.

I didn't try to burn it on a DVD-R and check it it will happen the same thing..

Doing a bit of research after posting this thread I also found that to be the case.

Some report that the best way to add the boarders is using AVISynth 2.5 with MeGUI so I obtained both of them but don't have a clue how to add the boarders.

Also, wouldn't that mean re-encoding the MKV - thus losing video quality in the process?

Anyway, thanks for the input.

Several options to play video on PS3:
two works for sure:
- AVCHD: reencode video after adding borders to match 720p or 1080i/p resolution
- MP4: reencode audio to AAC, mux audio and video into mp4 container (should be less than 4GB) - no need to convert video resolution

Others to try:
You could mux to m2ts and play m2ts files without AVCDH structure
You could convert to mpg/vob with mkv2vob http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=131782

The problem is to add borders you must re-encode (regardless of what guide you use) and there go many hours. The simplest thing for me is to remux to .m2ts then rename the file to .m2t and use tversity to setup a server on my PC and just stream it to the ps3. Works perfectly every time, no re-encoding needed.

playing it with tversity is the same thing at coping the movie on the external HD, and browse the file manually. so no advantage using tversity.. I stop using that.. no more suttering.

There is one big advantage by using tversity. You are not limited by the 4GB file size that you have when using an external fat32 drive. I have never had a problem with studdering.

I use Mediatomb on my Mac to stream to the PS3, and streaming is what I would always recommend first.
the only time I use the Fat32 drive method is when I need to use forced subtitles in a movie.
